UNESCO sites?

by nataliegoestojapan

Is the Herder House listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites the same thing as the Kirms-Krackow-Haus? Anybody know? And is the Old High School they mention different from the Civil School? I'm confused.

Re: UNESCO sites?

The Kirms-Krackow-Haus is a reminder of how people lived during the days of Goethe. Goethe was guest in the house, as was Herder. The house also accomodates the Herder Museum (if I'm not mistaken) which could be the reason for the confusion, but the Herderhaus is located at Herderplatz (or a little north, next to Herdergarten) as opposed to Kirms-Krackow-Haus which can be found at 10, Jakobstrasse.

There's an "Altes Gymnasium" which would best be translated into "Old Highschool". Not sure what you mean by "Civil School".

Travel Tips for Weimar

The Park on the Ilm

by alancollins

The Park on the Ilm is situated on the eastern side of the Aldstadt and was developed between 1778 and 1828 with input from Goethe. This is a large park and a wonderful place to sit and watch the world go by. Some of the places of interest are Goethes Garden House, the Soviet Cemetery and the Roman House.

War Memorial

by christine.j

While the center of Weimar was really busy with tourists, the cemetery was almost deserted.
It's just a short stroll away from the center, no more than 10 minutes, but not many people went there. We entered through the gate and to our left we saw a churchlike memorial. The door was locked, but we could read the inscription. It is a memorial for victims of the first world war.

Van der Velde and Bauhaus

by dutchboycalledjan

The Belgian architect and artist Henry van der Velde has lived in Weimar and left some remarkable results. The interior of the Nietzsche house is one, this staircase in the academy is another. The Kunstgewerbeschule (School voor Kunstnijverheid) and the academy in Weimar, are the predecessors of Bauhaus. There are also a few villa's left in and around Weimar of this representative of functional Art Nouveau. We found a folder at the Nietzsche house with the addresses. Some of the villa's are in bad repair.
In this neighbourhood are several good, but 'anonymous' buildings.

The Soviet Cemetery

by alancollins

The Soviet Cemetery was set up in June 1945 and by April 1946, 640 members of the Soviet Army had been interred here. The cemetery is in Park on the Ilm and it has raised controvesy over the years with its location and the park’s association with Goethe. It is located in tranquil setting and took me a while to find. The headstones have names on both sides which is something I have not seen before but is an obvious way of saving space and money.
