Travel Tips for Saarbrücken
Bridges over the Saar river
by Urzu
As its own name explains, Saarbrücken is filled with bridges that cross the river, and many of these are worth taking a look at! There are brigdes from many different styles, and of course you can get a lovely view of the city from many of them. What's also nice is the Saar "crane", which you can find at the Wilhelm-Heinrich-Brücke. This crane is a homage to Saarbrücken's trade history. It was first built in the 18th century, but as many other monuments of the city it was destroyed many times over the years. The final reconstruction of the crane took place in 1991.
Also something really nice is to stroll along the Saar river, especially around the City theatre area... when I was living there there you would often find people sunbathing by the river sides... nice!
University of Music
by Nemorino
The University of Music (Hochschule fuer Musik Saar) is conveniently located right behind the theater. And right next to the modern art gallery, if that is any help.
Classical music and jazz concerts and recitals by students, faculty and guests are held every few days either here or in nearby churches or former churches, and are usually open to the public, either at no cost (in the case of student recitals) or at a cost of 5 or 6 Euros.

St. Johanner Markt
by antistar
I think most photographs you can find online of Saarbrucken's St. Johanner Markt are taken with a wide angled lens, because it's quite cramped, especially by German standards. Even for town's half its size it is small, and for a state capital it is positively puny. The real square's of note are in front of the castle and Ludwigskirche.
However, this is the square with all the life. The long, busy shopping street of Bahnhofstrasse feeds into St. Johanner Markt, and the square silts up with all kinds of people festooned with all kinds of consumer goods. Expect to find here all kinds of wares for people with tired, overloaded arms, like coffee, beer and waffles.
What to expect???
by jenniferhen
"High hopes of Oktoberfest!"
We went to Germany to see a friend that we had met on a previous trip to Cuba. We had emailed back and forth and decided that the best thing to do while in Germany in October was, of course, Oktoberfest!!
Long story short, things did not work out, but I loved Germany all the same. We definately put in some time sampling beers, eating glorious meats, and the deserts, dont even get me started on the deserts.
Going to Saarbrucken changed our trip altogether...From Saarbrucken we were going to go to Nuremberg but on the advice of our new friends... South Africa instead! No that is a detour that I am glad I took!

Q: Airport-Train Connections "Can you please tell me the distance between the Saarbrucken Airport and the train station where I would catch the train to Paris?..."
A: "I have no personal experience with this, but that new Saarbrücken to Paris TGV got my attention as well.
