Travel Tips for Saarbrücken
Saarlouis
by Kutzhofer
When you are at SB, visit Saarlouis as well. Saarlouis is a town located about 20 km down the river. The town had been founded as a fortress by the French King Louis XIV. , the old town is famous for numerous pubs with a really nice flair especially in summer.
Karl-Marx-Strasse
by Nemorino
As a former working-class city (there used to be numerous mines and factories in this area, most of which have now closed down) Saarbruecken is one of the few (West) German cities that has a street named after Karl Marx (1818-1883), the founder of scientific socialism.
Marx was born in Trier, which is maybe a hundred or so kilometers downstream from Saarbruecken, just past the place where the Saar flows into the Mosel.
As you can see if you enlarge the photo, it is not a particularly glamorous street, even though the two young ladies are doing their best to feel glamorous in their new underwear. French cigarettes are being advertised on the left, and the cigarette machine on the right is -- typically -- mounted low to the ground so that small children will not have to stand on tiptoes to become addicted.
Moderne Galerie
by Nemorino
As the name implies, this is a modern museum for modern art from the twentieth and presumably also the twenty-first centuries, starting with the German expressionists and going on from there.
I think the best word to describe this museum would be spacious. There is plenty of room for another century's worth of art works, and also room for several hundred visitors. When I was there recently on a Sunday afternoon I was the only visitor in the whole building, so it seemed a bit lonely and sterile, and the guards outnumbered me by about fifteen to one.
To be fair, though, I should point out that this was one of those rare Sundays when the stores in the city center were allowed to open up and sell things, so a lot of people were probably shopping instead of going to museums. And a group of four young people did arrive at the museum just as I was leaving.
bmiller39's new Saarbrucken Page

Actually, this page is about a nearby city St. Avold, France where this is an American Cemetary..I couldn't find a page builder for St Avold on Virtual Tourist so I picked the closest listing. The area around St Avold really has a lot of history...On my way to the city of St Avold, I passed through the town of Hoburg-Haut and found a local tourist office that was extremely helpful..They gave me a couple of brochures to the Military Museum in Freyming-merlebach, some info about Sarreguemines, and Hambourg-Haut itself...
Questions and Answers
Q: Airport-Train Connections "Can you please tell me the distance between the Saarbrucken Airport and the train station where I would catch the train to Paris?..."
A: "I have no personal experience with this, but that new Saarbrücken to Paris TGV got my attention as well.
The Saarbrücken Airport website says RSW Regional Bus 10 goes..."
