Cheap accomodation in Gibraltar
Accomodation in Gibraltar is not the chepeast. In a place high frequented by tourists and limited in its space, the available hotel rooms are sold at higher prices than elsewhere. Many Gibraltar visitors even book their rooms in Spanish cities like Tarifa, Malaga or Algeciras. For those who want to stay in Gibraltar and are on low budget, you may consider this hotel. The Cannon Hotel offers you rooms for an only slightly higher price than a hostel bed in Gibraltar. It is nothing luxurious, but it is fine and you have your own privacy. The hotel has shared bathrooms only which were not perfect, but clean enough for most of us.
Unique Quality: The hotel offers you the usual amenities, including TV and coffee/tea making stuff. Bathrooms are always shared, breakfast is included. The full english breakfast is not the best I have eaten and the kitchen staff is among the less motivated I have ever seen. But at least most of the receptionists were very friendly. It is a better choice than the hostel and OK considering the prices of other houses in Gibraltar. However, it cannot compete with places outside of this British enclave.
Directions: Coming from Casemates Square, walk southwards along Main Street until you see the Cathedral on the left hand side. Turn left and you will see the hotel on the left hand side.

"The Cannon Hotel gets a lot of flack. But at this, the cheapest accommodations in Gib, you pretty much get what you pay for. And with doubles going for £27 (shared bath) and 46 (with bath), you can't beat the price. Of course, if you want the best rates, you should stay across the border in La Linea de la Concepcion.
Rooms are clean (I haven't seen any creepy-crawlies) and basic: no TV, no a/c, (fans & heaters are provided) but a full English breakfast is included. Rooms overlooking Cannon Lane can be a bit noisy due to late-night revelers."
"Despite booking 2 weeks in advance and requesting in advance an en suite, I was now told that there was only a shared bathroom, and I could take it or leave it.
On going up to the room thru dim grubby looking stairwells which had a stale scent indicating that mice (or worse) were also in residence, I entered a small depressing cell with furniture fit only for firewood, tatty curtains that fell off the rail when pulled and a pair of ratty old beds that should have been replaced years ago along with the bed linen. On going to look at the communal bathroom it was grim, dark, uncleaned & looked distinctly unhygenic."
"This hotel is quaint and well aged. The furnishings are quite old fashioned.
The staff were friendly to us and the full English breakfast served was good and filling.
The room was a bit small but it has its own sink and the shared bathrooms were down the hall. These could be kept a bit cleaner. Also it was difficult to get a proper night sleep as there is a pub right next door. But overall we had a lovely stay, and you can't beat the location nor the price."
"This was a great place to stay, I was at the in Hotel February 2003 when I popped over to Tangier."
Unique Quality: The Cannon Hotel Gibraltar is a small family run hotel in the heart of Gibraltar. The Cannon Hotel is newly refurbished and was re-opened in June 1995 by Gibraltar's previous Chief Minister.
The Hotel is able to offer Bed and Breakfast accommodation. Guests have the opportunity to have breakfast, lunch and dinner in the bar/restaurant or just have a drink in the open-air patio. Guests staying in the hotel are in walking distance to all parts of town because the Cannon Hotel is situated in Gibraltar's shopping centre and just a 2 minute walk to many of Gibraltar's bars and restaurants.
The rooms are newly refurbished with light wooden floors and pine furniture. The rooms are either overlooking the street outside the hotel or facing towards a patio.
Guests also have the opportunity to choose a room with or without bathroom.
When you are staying at the Cannon Hotel an English breakfast is included in the price.

Worst I've been in
I did an online search for a hotel and found the Cannon to be reasonably priced at $50.00/€38/£25.00 per night, I was to stay two nights before heading for Tangier.
As other hotels were considerably more expensive or had no rooms available at that time, I booked a room at the Cannon via e-mail but on arrival was immediately disappinted when I enterred the building and headed to the pub-like reception. It was raining outside and also raining inside as there is an open courtyard allowing rain to cascade in.
I paid for two nights and headed for my room but found the need to press myself against the wall whilst walking towards my room to avoid getting soaked.
It was March and very cold outside and just as cold inside with the feeling of dampness in the air; only one blanket was provided and there was no heating. The bed was an old metal and spring frame with the headboard screwed to the wall, the bed creaked each time I turned over. The only other items of furniture in the room were a bedside table and wardrobe which was in imminent danger of collapse.
The view was through the front of the hotel onto Cannon Lane and a cafe/bar opposite where the burglar alarm sounded throughout the first night.
The staff (who were quite embarrassed I think) have to ration heaters between rooms as there weren't enough of them. The walls were constructed of plasterboard so as to allow one to hear everything which goes on in the adjoining rooms. My neighbour got up once every hour until daylight, slamming the door as hard as she possibly could.
Breakfast was full English, one greasy egg, one rasher bacon and one sausage with a few beans or a vegetarian option comprising two toast and one egg. Tea, coffee and juice were freely available in copious amounts.
I was relieved to vacate the hotel at the end of the second day and recommend that this hotel should be avoided at all costs even though it has allegedly had a programme of renovation just recently if one is to believe their website; noise echoes in every direction and it is cold and damp and inhospitable. If you must stay here, pay only for one night to experience the poor quality and next day go and check out alternative hotels, there are several just as bad so worth paying extra for somewhere like the Queens.
Having given my critical review of the Cannon, I was somewhat mortified to see that other guests were actually pleased to stay there.
Unique Quality: This hotel has no outstanding qualities what-so-ever.
Directions: Cannon Lane is off main Street, entrance near Cathedral of St Mary The Crowned.
The Cannon Hotel
It is a small hotel, and people whom I know that have stayed there are somewhat unsatisfied with this hotel, but this hotel is cheap for Gibraltar prices so expect a very basic room. It is in the town centre within the pedestrianised area so parking a car is a problem, but parking is available at a ten minute walk.
the cheapest hotel in town
the room was very basic. Two beds, a wardobe, a mirror and a sink - but it was clean and the staff were friendly.
You can book a room with or without bathroom (they had none left with bathroom when I booked) but those without bathrooms have one next door anyways. Again, the bathrooms are basic, but clean and the water is always hot.
Breakfast is served to you. Theres tea, hot chocolate, coffee and orange juice. You can have cornflakes, toast and a full cooked british breakfast. Its all included in the price. Breakfast is 8.30 to 9.45 and there´s always a table.
The hotel has a bar too - it serves as reception as well and an open courtyard inside to have a drink in. You can buy other meals at the hotel too.
Unique Quality: the hotel is in the centre of gibraltar. It is very cheap. It is clean. The staff are friendly. All the staff speak English and some speak Spanish too. Prices at the hotel are in Pounds Sterling.
Directions: centre of town. well signposted from border
Cheap & Cheerful
Small hotel with only 18 rooms, set in side street just off Main St.Very good value for money.
Breakfast is good, full English with cereal, toast, juice the works.
Can't beat this hotel if on tight budget & maybe passing through for a couple of nights.
Situated close to all the hustle & bustle of Main St in the day.
Unique Quality: Has small bar area & courtyard where you can eat.
You can book a room with own bathroom or just a room without bathroom & share communal, which i did'nt but if you don't mind makes it work out cheaper.
Directions: Cannon lane is more or less opposite the old piazza .
The Cannon Hotel is just off Gibraltar's Main Street. It is a somewhat spartan establishment - no chocolates on the pillow here - but who needs lavish pampering when it offers cheap and clean accommodation right in the heart of Gibraltar? The location couldn't be bettered: two steps and a stagger from two of Gibraltar's most popular bars, the Gibraltar Arms and the Horseshoe Bar.
