Certainly not the best, but close to the frontier
Posts taken from www.wikipedia.com, www.tripadvisor.com, www.hotelgibraltar.com and www.hostelz.com. The first two reviews were from 2006-2007 and the last two from 2008, so maybe things have improved?!
"Emile Youth Hostel - A family-run hostel with basic shared rooms for £15 or 25 euros, though the dad only wanted 20 euros. Including continental breakfast consisting of two pieces of toast and jam. It should be noted that the kitchen is not for guests' use. Checkout: 10:30."
"I have stayed in around 50 hostels and this is one of the worst ones out there. Hostel is closed for half the day. Most expensive hostel in western europe. Dont reply to emails. Rooms are damp and musty smelling. No common / social area to sit outside your room. Breakfast was terrible, 1 small bread roll with jam (no butter). I asked for hot water for my own tea during breakfast and they said no, even though the kettle was boiling, they said everyone else (4 other people there) would also like some water.
The hostel is in 2 parts, one for western travellers and one for moroccan travellers. Even though you are paying probably three times what the poorer moroccans are paying, you get lumped in with them and treated like a second class citizen. Not a nice vibe.
There are other pensions in the area, for a similar cost, I advise you to stay there."
"When I go traveling, I don't go to sleep, or to hang around in the common room. I can do that at home. I want cheap digs, and the Emile supplies that. If you want luxurious rooms and steak and egg for breakfast, stay in a £100 a night hotel and you'll get them. If you want to spend your money having as much fun as you can have with your clothes on, then bollocks to the five stars, and stay in Emile's. I stayed there in 1985 and am going back in September this year."
"First class. I stayed at this hostel in July 2004, and I vowed to return again one day -- and I did again in July 2008, I stayed here again and had my wife with me the second time round. I think the Emile hostel was super, a lot of hot water available, comfortable bedrooms and dorms. Only one bad point, it certainly wouldn't be recommended though for families because when we were there, there were families with screaming babies. Overall, we had a pleasant stay. Highly recommended for cheaper accommodation."
Unique Quality: The Emile Youth Hostel Gibraltar hostel is not star/diamond graded under the RAC grading scheme for the Gibraltar Tourist Board as the RAC does not currently have a scheme for this type of property. However the property is inspected regularly by the Gibraltar Tourist Board and is Gibraltar Tourist Board Approved.

A clean bed in the heart of town....
....with hot showers, friendly staff, and a good breakfast - what more could a traveler want!?
You pay per bed, so if you don't mind not knowing who's in the bunk below you (a middle-aged Australian backpacker, who thankfully did not snore, in my case), its the cheapest place in town and definitely a good bargin.
Unique Quality: It's only about 100m up the road from the main town square, which is a much more convenient location for walking around than most places in town (though, I have to admit that basically nothing is "far" in Gibraltar - it's not big enough!)

One of the Only Hostels in Gibraltar
My friend and I got a double room for 30 Pounds, which was kind of pricey for what we got, though it's understandable considering this is the way Gibraltar is as a whole. Two single beds, no air conditioning, a small window, and a dresser. Only thing notable about the room is that the walls were painted neon green. Community bathroom is clean and well kept. One complaint I did have is that the hostel is right next to a daycare center, and playtime must be early because things got EXTREMELY noisy around 8 AM. Free continental breakfast consists of muffin, tea, and toast.

Emile Youth Hostel.
It was twelve pounds a night for a bunk in a room of eight when I was there. That included a basic breakfast of bread and fruit with a hot drink.
Unique Quality: This hostel is pretty basic but the proprietors are friendly and the dining room/communual area is nice and large. The rooms are pretty cramped with eight people in each room and not much space to put your backpack down! Still it's probably the nicest cheap alternative in Gibraltar and as far as I know there are only two!
