A little touch of the colonial past!
by gordonilla
This was one of the hotels recommended to me when I booked my flight as a BA holiday, and it was cheaper when linked to the air fare. It was a reasonable choice, as it was close to both the town and the Rock. On the other hand everything in Gibraltar has those qualities.
It was an unusual start to a visit - I initial thought the room was not so clean and when I was offered another room the view was poor. I opted to stay in my original room.
However the next day I (and many other guests) discovered we had no hot water. After much discussion I was upgraded and given a suite! Let's not get carried away though, it had a sitting room and a separate bedroom and bathroom. There was a large terrace facing the straits and the harbour with a good view of North Africa.
I was writing up my travel journal, and saw in the mirror a family of apes, who have established a small colony near the hotel and nearby gardens. This is an easy source of food. Apparently the apes come into rooms and remove the sugar and biscuits from the tea trays. So keep the room doors and windows closed is the advice.
The restaurant was pleasant and both dinner and breakfast was very enjoyable. A lot of staff even in out of the normal tourist season.
The wlan/wifi works well.
Unique Quality: The view and the art gallery in the hotel.

The Rock Hotel is a colonial style building with views to Africa, built in 1932. The rooms are airconditioned. This hotel has a swimming pool and has plenty of parking. The Casino is located very close to this Hotel.

Gibraltar's most famous Hotel
by easyoar
Things may have changed, as I stayed in this hotel in 1994! However at the time it was claiming to be a 5 star hotel. We only stayed there as we had a very good deal at the time.
However when we went into the room, we were shocked at how antiquated it was. It wasn't a particularly nice room at all, although it had a very good view out over the Straits of Gibraltar.
They claim this hotel is an institution, and has had the likes of Sean Connery stay in it, but it looked at the time like this institution had not been modernised since it was built!
Unique Quality: There's a casino next door if this sort of thing interests you...

For the Famous
by bugalugs
This is another hotel where you need to take a mortgage out to stay one night. Room rates are something in the region of ?190.00 a night, well they were when I checked before we went. That price does include a full english breakfast though!
Unique Quality: It has a freshwater pool, with poolside bar.
It was built in the 1930's and guests include Winston Church and Errol Flynn.
It may be better if you wanted to stay here to book on a package deal it might be cheaper than flying over and then renting a room.

The Rock Hotel experience
by julin
Recomended for a great experience.Outdoor pool across road.Views great.Sit on your balcony and watch the shipping go by.Road outside noisy.
Unique Quality: Have stayed at The Rock many times. It is an experience in itself. It is a long hard climb from town but more pleasant if you walk through the lovely botanic gardens. The butterflies in summer are lovely. They have added a small zoo to the gardens to house animals confiscated from illegal shipments.
Only thing I don't like about the hotel is the beds are a liitle too firm.Afternoon tea on the terrace is wonderful.

"THE" Place To Stay
by freya_heaven
Have to admit, I havent stayed here YET. But I am planning to next time.
It was built in 1932 by the Marquis of Bute
Unique Quality: Great Views, swimming pool, decorated in a colonial style, AND of course .............................Michael Palin stayed here both before he ventured off to Africa and then again on his return, when filming his "Sahara" series.

The Rock Hotel.

160-165 GBP per night.
Unique Quality: The Rock Hotel is an institution in Gibraltar. It was built in 1932 by the Marquis of Bute and to this day still offers standards of service and guest care from that bygone, more genteel era.
Historical visitors' books boast a veritable who's who of famous patrons.
It supports a casino, a pool, varying bars and a beutiful Wisteria covered terrace. From the terrace on a clear day you can see the Riff Mountains in Morocco.

Although I didn't get to stay...

Although I didn't get to stay here, I'll still highly recommend The Rock Hotel. Man, this place is an institution in Gibraltar! Built in 1932 by the Marquis of Bute, to this day it still offers standards of service and guest care from that bygone, more genteel era (per what their high acclaim brochure states). :-)
Unique Quality: This hotel has been recently refurbished in typical colonial style.... offering 104 rooms with stunning views (i.e. panoramic views across the Bay of Gibraltar, the Spanish mainland and the Rif Mountains of Morocco!).

Lovely hotel. A little far out of town, but to get the views from every room you need to be. We had 2 interconnecting very large second floor rooms. It was not possible to lock the interconnecting door from one side and the cleaning could do a little better.
