Hostal Ismael: A Lucky Find

by RaeganB

For some unknown reason when we arrived in Gibraltar on a Wednesday during off season every hotel and hostal in the city/country was filled to capacity. After 10 hours in the car all that we wanted to do was find a place to sleep. I would have settled for anything as D had been driving the whole way. We left Gibraltar and began to look around La Linea, only to experience the same problem. And I'm glad we did. We drove 5 minutes further down the road and ended up in Campamento and happened across Hostal Ismael.

Hostal Ismael turned out to be a lovely clean, comfortable and affordable establishment. There is a swimming pool with a waterslide (for the young at heart) and the owners went out of their way to make us comfortable, including offering us dinner poolside after a nice swim. The rooms were in good condition and this is a great place to stay if you happen to have a car. It is a little bit too far away from the entrance to Gibraltar to walk, although we did see a bus stop. The rooms were 45 euros for a single and 55 euros for a double. Putting it much less expensive than staying in Gibraltar.

Swimming pool, clean rooms, nice staff, close to Gibraltar.
I do not have a single negative comment to make about this hostal. My entire experience there was lovely.
Also has air conditioning.

Hotel Mediterraneo: Mediterraneo Hotel La Linea - cheaper than Gib

by krustyclown

This is a fairly small and basic hotel, however it's clean and comfortable - if you dont need to spend alot of time in the hotel and will be out and about, then it's a good place to rest your head at the end of the day.
When we arrived, the staff were helpful. We'd booked a double room, but effectively got a room with 4 separate almost-double size beds - easy enough to push together if you want to. The room was spacious, with an ensuite shower/bath room and a small wardrobe - with decent hangers! Had to ask for the safe key and pay a 10 euro deposit, but although old-fashioned, the safe was a sturdy one, bolted to the floor so ideal to keep money and valuables in.
There was air conditioning but not very strong, although the room kept quite cool anyway, despite being the middle of July. Beds were comfortable.
On the downside, we had requested a balcony but didnt get one, however the windows had a fantasic view of the beach. Also, there was no minibar/fridge to keep drinks cool, but you can buy chilled water from the bar downstairs.
On the positive side, breakfast was an excellent buffet - fresh rolls, bread, meats, cheese, eggs, yoghurt, fruit, pastries etc, plus we had a superb tortilla one day! The hotel can book taxis for you which arrive in about 3 mins and it is a 1 min walk to the beach across the road, 10-12 mins walk into the centre of La Linea (some lovely spanish shops and cafes there) and about 15 -18 mins walk to the border of Gibraltar. The area seemed safe and had a relaxed feel about it.
A good tip for eating - try 'Chango' bar/restaurant just 2 mins walk along the beach from the hotel -great spanish food, full of local people and superb views!
So all in all, this hotel is between 2.6 and 3 stars out of 5 - it is basic but clean, and the positives certainly outweigh the negatives. Considering accom is much more expensive in Gibraltar, this is great value and you can easily access Gib from the hotel (in fact you have a nice view of the rock when you stand outside the hotel!)

Wish we had stayed in Gibraltar!

by jgemini65

Unfortunately, we didn't stay in Gibraltar! We stayed in Algeciras! Gibraltar seemed to expensive when I was researching the trip and to far from the ports! As it turned out...it would have been very doable to stay on the Briish enclave!

The food situation alone would have made Gibraltar a better choice!

Hotels in La Linea: If you want to save a little money

by Erin09340

We stayed at a really nice hotel outside Gibraltar for about 60 Euros. Much better deal then trying to stay in Gibraltar itself.

AC La Linea: Cheap & Chic

by Helen196

I booked this hotel on hotels.com for the bargain price of £42 but when we got there I knew why - it's located in La Linea which is in Spain not Gibraltar and it was about 2km walk to the border.

Howver the hotel itself was great. Really clean and modern rooms with lovely bathrooms.

It was quite easy to find once you've figured out the instructions that hotel.com give you are very confusing. You just look for the AC sign on the roof when you come down the La Linea Conception to Gibraltar.

The AC doesn't have a bar but instead a complimentary bottle of Vodka, Gin and Whisky with a fridge full of mixers in the lounge area!!! We discovered it too late though and only managed to get one drink before they shut it in order to serve dinner.

Want some where to stay?

I have not stayed in any of the hotels in Gibraltar, but if you happen to be looking the best place to go is the tourist information office located in Casemates Square, from there they can tell you all you need to know.

Hotel "Mediterraneo": Close to "The Rock"

by sailornappo

Not to be compared to the Marriott, its nevertheless a clean and AFFORDABLE place, very close to the entrance to Gibraltar-about 5 min by car - and offers a buffet style breakfast. Next door is a clean chinese restaurant that also serves a variety of other foods.

View of the Rock and the ocean. We stayed 2 nights, and would use it again.
