    Aldemar Knossos Royal Hersonissos

    by

A world-class Thalasso and spa with beautiful gardens and a private beach are just a few of the great features of the Aldemar Royal Mare & Thalasso. Combine this with a first-class service, deluxe décor and facilities that are second to none and you can really look forward to your stay here.

Unique Quality: Rooms - Inside, the rooms fall firmly into the 'elegant' category. Think marble bathrooms with separate walk-in shower, comfortable beds dressed with luxury bedcovers and chaise-longues. For some extra luxury opt for a VIP room - they come with a gorgeous private shared pool.

Fab Hotel!

by TripAdvisor Member JofandAli

We stayed at the Knossos Royal Village in August for 2 weeks with our 2 kids (5 and 2) in a family room and thought the place was excellent. The family rooms are spacious with a master bedroom , kids room with 2 single beds, TV and table and a nice size bathroom. The meals were great (although no brown sauce at breakfast time - a travesty!), the staff are excellent - especially the animation team who work hard to entertain you and the kids all day. It's a distance from Hersonissos town (about 30 min walk to the town centre) but its a nice location, the beach was lovely and the views are great. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone!

A great week's stay

by TripAdvisor Member TigerSuffolk

We have just returned from a half board week at the Aldemar Knossos Royal Village with Olympic Holidays. The Village is set on a headland, away from the madding crowd, about 2k from Hersonissos, I'm sure there's transport to the town but we preferred to walk there via the coastal path.

There are a few small beaches along the way, one of which is a nudist beach. And no, we didn't! Although it is necessary to pay for loungers and umbrellas, the local beaches are kept clean. Rocks and seaweed make them a reasonable area for snorkellers. The town beach is not up to much but I've definitely seen worse. More real sandy beaches are to the east of the town centre.

The well kept Village is set out to avoid the huge complex feel. There are two pools - and a couple of smaller ones nearer the beach Our room was spacious with a large en suite. It was spotlessly clean, and kept that way all week.

Entertainment was low key at this time of year but pleasant enough.

There was always a good selection of buffet food to suit all tastes. My only criticism is that the food was not always very hot.

The service from everyone from reception staff, to dining room staff and cleaning staff was excellent - always polite and attentive.

The weather in May varied from warm to hot, to cloudy and wet. Overall it was very good. Unfortunately the one wet day put paid to our planned visit to the Samaria Gorge which was closed for safety reasons. I guess we'll just have to return to Crete another time.

A word of warning - avoid the 'timeshare' sellers in town. There are many of them offering 'prizes' from scratch cards. Remember if it sounds too good to be true - it probably is.

Happy holidays.

The palace of Knossos is few kilometers south of Herakleion and easily accessable by bus or taxi, but should be seen as early as possible or in the off season. The ruins are extensive and fancinating and should be enjoyed at a time when you are not suffering from the heat or trampled by the crowds. Among the ruins, beautiful frescos and giant pithoi are the remains of the worlds first flush toilet.

Great holiday, hotel not 5*

by TripAdvisor Member Kent_Traveller7

Our overall holiday was fantastic, the hotel was nice however not 5* more like a good 3*

We stayed half board however only ate in the main resturant once as the food was awful, there was a huge variety of food but it was not great and only just warm.

We ate in the resturants in the hotel and although the food was nice the service was slow and it was quite expensive.

Every night from then we went into Hersonissos or nearby to some lovely resturants.

The evening entertainment in the hotel was great, there was something different every day plus a show from the animation team. The main bar was very small and did get a bit crowded at times, expect to pay London prices for drinks in the hotel. The animation team did a show in the Amipitheatre but as I have a 4 year old she didn't want to sit through and would rather have a dance at the bar.

The main pool was salt water and was lovely and relaxing, the other pool was not comfortable and very crowded, the children's pool were awful, very dirty.

The animation team were constantly trying to get everyone involved in the activities which was great.

Watersports on the beach were fantantic

The family room was comfortable but not 5* standard

The hotel was also 80% Russian guests, it did not bother us but would have been nice to meet some British holiday makers too!

The kids club was brilliant, my daughter had hours of fun there, they keep them inside doing various activities to keep them occupied, they are fed, have juice and water and lots of friut, the carers were trustworthy and even baby sat one evening.

I visited the spa in the close by Aldemar hotel, I had a facial which I was really looking forward to. Please don't bother with this treat, you will be very disappointed!

Overall the 2 week holiday was fantastic, just don't be fooled by thinking you are going to a great 5* resort - Knossos Royal Village is lovely but it is an overpriced 3* hotel in reality.

Great place to stay, glad we decided to go all inclusive.

by TripAdvisor Member EE-AW

My boyfriend Paul and I have just returned from our holiday to Hersonissos, Crete. We stayed at the Aldemar Knossos Royal Village (on the outskirts of hersonissos) and what a delight it was to see when we were dropped off by the coach at 3.30am. The porter was very helpful and took us and our luggage to our room on a buggy. Our room was lovely, spacious and clean but all we wanted to do at that point was get some sleep before breakfast. When we got up we did have one little problem. I opened the curtains to find our view, a large tree right up to the balcony, we didn't have a view at all. We went up for breakfast and was very pleased to see the wide variety of foods on offer and with welcoming staff who gladly showed us around the restaurant it was just what we needed. Afterwards it was time for the welcome meeting where we met Hannah our rep. We mentioned the problem with our view and she was very quick to sort it out for us. After speaking with recieption she managed to get another room for us to see. To cut a long story short two days later we were in a new room that was even better than the first. A huge balcony with two sun loungers a table and two chairs with great views of pretty gardens, we could even see the sea.
When we first arrived at the hotel we were also given two free tickets for staying all inclusive, one for a gala dinner and the other for a meal at the taverna. We just had to see someone in the main restaurant to make the reservations. Both meals were lovely and they really made the effort to make things nice for you. They were five coarse set meals and at the gala dinner (by the main pool) we had a female vocalist on her keyboard playing romantic songs. The main pool looked spectacular although we only went in it twice, we're more beach people than the pool, it's just personal choice I suppose. There were two large salt water pools and two other pools for v.i.p. guests only on the front.
For all inclusive guests we had the manatari bar which was handy for when spending the day at the hotels private beach, for us to get drinks and snacks for example:- hotdogs, pizza, sausage rolls. Then there was the Ouzeri which was good for if you missed your evening meal for whatever reason or just fancied a late snack, they had food and drinks between 10pm-12pm. The main bar was situated next to the main pool and we enjoyed many evenings there. I was glad we had decided to go all inclusive though after seeing the price of the drinks if we'd gone HB. One of the waitresses Katarina was wonderful and brought us various bar snacks to go with our drinks. A little warning though we think she secretly enjoys getting guests drunk by plying them with Raki but we didn't get involved in any of that.....honest! My only dissappointment about the hotel was that the ampitheatre where most of the evening entertainment was held had no bar within it, so when wanting a drink you would have to leave the show to go across to the cellar bar or the main bar. That is why most of the time we stayed at the main bar they also had some entertainment for example a singer, dj or pianist.
Lunch time and evening meals at the restaurant were just as pleasing as breakfast time, self service buffet style again and we were spoilt for choice. During our stay we only ate out of the hotel when on excursions and on one occasion when we just really craved a chinese. That was at a chinese restaurant in hersonissos, on the same road as MacDonalds and i have to say that was the best duck i've ever tasted!
The animation team who were responsible for the day and evening entertainment did a really good job. Full of energy, unlike Paul and I, we were just happy to watch. They also had a nightclub at the hotel called 'Aquarious' which they opened a couple of times each week. If you were stuck for something to do during the day they had a crazy golf coarse on site too. They also had a games room at the hotel full of arcade games, pool tables, air hockey etc great for kids or big kids like us.
Well our two weeks flew by so fast and it was nearly time to go home. We vacated the room at 12 o'clock miday and the porter came again to collected our luggage which they looked after in the luggage room until our pick up time. We spent the last day at the beach (not recovering from a 'Raki' hangover) and took in the last sights of the hotel and it's surrondings. We used the courtesy showers over at the gym before we had our evening meal. I think when we come back though, we would pay to have the room untill later if we had a late flight again, as it is better having the privacy of your on room is'nt it. After our last meal it was back to the main bar for an hour before we got picked up (only soft drinks this time :-)
All in all we had a wonderful time at Knossos Royal and didnt get to try everything on offer, like the spa at the neighbouring hotel or the horse riding at the stables in hersonissos, so we'd definatley go back.
P.s. If going on holiday to Crete do go on the SafariClub ultimate off-road experience, it was the best day of our holiday. Say hello to Harry for us x

Excellent Honeymoon, Amazing Holiday, Brilliant Hotel!

by TripAdvisor Member Pikabeck

We returned from our honeymoon at the Knossos Royal just last week. I have to say that it was absolutely fantastic!

The staff are incredibly pleasant, the service is what you would expect in a 5* hotel and the food is out of this world! I got worried when we booked all inclusive as I didn't want the 'same old' buffet every night, but there is always something different and I never saw the same two meals in a fortnight. You even get luxuries such as veal and mussells, of which are fabulous!

We had a gala dinner by the pool, of which was amazing! We also had two Taverna dinners, one complimentary as we were honeymooners, and again, amazing food.

The beach bar was great and you get your own bar for AI. We totally pigged out on gorgeous pizza, sandwiches, chicken nuggets (yum!) and these really groovy foldy-over pastries of which had either pesto or feta cheese in them.

I would say the bar entertainment was more suited for 'mature' couples, but the animation team were out of this world...SUPERB and an absolute assett to the hotel! We enjoyed many musicals and caberets. On their nights off, they had an OK magician and a absoluyely fantastic dance team.

Our Thomas Cook rep was lovely - Hannah - a real gem. We had been given a garden room on arrival, but she quickly got us switched to a nice, private sea view room, and did regular champagne runs for us!!! (come on...it was our honeymoon).

The cocktails are amazing - I lived on Blue Lagoons! The cocktail guy is brilliant! Waitresses in the main bar are so lovely. However, drinks are pricey, so if you are going, it probably is best to do AI just for the drinks on top.

One negative thing though...the sunlounger issue by the pool - you can't get one as people 'reserve' them, but never use them, and this occurs at the beach too, but you can always get one there. There are so many selfish people that do that...it was really irritating.

Otherwise, a brilliant stay!

Definitely not a 5*

by TripAdvisor Member Housewife2

We booked this hotel and opted to stay in the supposedly private Royal Villas. We paid nearly £11,000 for a knossos villa which was supposed to comfortably house two adults and two children. We didn't get a particularly good feel about the hotel on arrival as the hotel did appear to be in the middle of nowhere and a not particuarly attractive approach.

We were taken to our villa which was tiny and nowhere near the quality which was described in the brochure. The lounge area which was separate to the bedroom was so small that with our luggage in you could hardly walk! The room was not luxury and to describe it as a villa was a joke it was just a very small apartment.

We had a meal in the evening which was quite good quality (not the main restaurant). We had a good walk around and were so disappointed with what we saw we opted to transfer to another hotel.

The hotel is ok and had we paid half of what we did we probably would have not been disappointed. However when you pay this much money to come to a 'luxury resort' you expect a certain level of quality and unfortunately this just isn't what you get here.

So all in all if you book the royal knossos village - you probably won't be too disappointed. However if you book the royal knossos villas and are expecting 5* deluxe accommodation/ services you probably will. Apart from a couple of supposedly private pools there is nothing to separate the villas from the village. We transferred to the Elounda Beach Hotel and were more than happy with this and got what we were previously expecting from the knossos village.

As you probably can guess, I won't be recommending this hotel to my friends!

A perfect holiday

by TripAdvisor Member lyntje

We are a belgian couple with a child of 4 years old. We booked the holiday with Neckermann. We stayed in the Royal Knossos Village from 3rd June until 14th June.

The hotelcomplex is beautifully situated directly near the beach (pebbles, rocky). There are several swimmingpools (salt water) and a couple of small ones for the babies. You can get towels for the pool/beach at the little shop near the main building for 15 EUR(!) per piece deposit (so in the end they are free). You can also lend sticks for the minigolf there. For other purchases, this shop is expensive, so you can best go to the nearest supermarket (small road upwards from the hotel) for drinks for your fridge, snacks, etc..
There is a main hotelbar, and a wine bar directly beneath that. There are also several restaurants in the hotel. The staff is very friendly.

The food is very good. Every morning and evening there was a LAAAARGE buffet. In the morning there were cooks that fried eggs freshly and baked pancakes ! And….. every morning champagne with you breakfast as much as you like !!! In the evening there were cooks that freshly cooked different kinds of meet or fish. There is a massive choice. And then the desserts….. not normal !!! Beware: you WILL gain a few pounds ! The orange juice that comes from the automat at breakfast tastes watery. Our child is very picky, so he would not drink it. We asked for a small orange juice in a box (with a straw), and it costed us 2,50 EUR !! So best to smuggle your own into the restaurant !

For the men: make sure you wear long trousers in the restaurant in the evening. If not, they will ask you to change them.
Personally, I found that the tables in the veranda where put very close together. Smoking was allowed too, so sometimes this was found disturbing. Otherwise, no problem. Staff were very diligent to clean tables so you can sit down asap.

Since is was still low season, everything was very quiet. In the evening, there is minidisco and a show afterwards. It is located at the amphitheater directly at the right side of the hotel – remoted from the hotel - so you hear no noice when sitting at your balcony or terras in the evening, enjoying that last drink of the day !
One evening there is a Greek evening with BBQ near the main pool. If you require more action in the evening, head for Hersonissos.

The rooms are very clean and renewed. We had a family room which consisted of two rooms with a bathroom. Very spacious. Wine, water and fruit upon arrival, slippers, a safe, a fridge, a TV in every room, and lots of soap, shampoo in the bathroom ! No bugs. An occasionel little gnat maybe.

The complex is very, very clean, and well maintained. The garden is really beautiful and if you go for a walk in the direction of “Fontana Amorosa” (or minigolf) you will discover the old milltower. Then you are at the right side of the hotel. If you cross the little street there, there is a lovely Ouzeria with blue tables. There, you have a beautiful view to Hersonissos. If you walk the path towards Hersonissos, you will get to a pebbled beach (not hurting your feet, but massaging !) with gorgeous blue and calm water. Great for swimming and snorkelling. There are sunbeds and parasols for rent for 6 EUR (two beds + one parasol). Not so bad, since there is no shade otherwise. Just above that beach is a nice local restaurant where you have a marvellous sea-view. Great for having your lunch with some cool white wine whilst enjoying the view.…. ! There is also a small supermarket there.

We had the most relaxing holiday. We enjoyed it very much. You have a nice time too !

Nice (all be it a little overpriced)

by TripAdvisor Member Westonboy

Having read earlier reviews we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived.

Reception was efficient and we were quickly checked in to two premium rooms in a block close to the main pool which were of a decent size, clean and had a patio area overlooking gardens. Wine, fruit and mineral water was waiting in our rooms.

Our bags were transported (by golf buggy) and the holiday was off to a good start.

The hotel had had some problems with over booking and we managed a 'win/ win’ by asking to swap our two rooms for one of the bigger villas. Much to our delight we were moved on our second day to the largest of the hotels villas, the Evropi, which had elevated sea views to the north and west and its own private pool, sauna, and jacuzzi. Better still this was at no extra cost.

The hotel has a great main pool, a little deep for non-swimmers (3m) and the entertainments team had a simple but fun programme of activities.

The guest relations manager (Noella Karbela) was very friendly and helpful and had lots of advice on things to do and see in the area.

The food in the main restaurant was nothing to write home about. The meals on the speciality evenings were really good (at an extra cost). Staff give these the hard sell, but we found them to be worth it, especially the Cretan and lobster nights.

I wouldn't recommend a trip into Hersonissos, unless you are of the 18 -30 crowd.

We went out-and-about on a few organised tours. A boat trip to Dia Island was dire!! – Not worth the money or the visit! Be warned.

The Land Rover discovery ‘safari’ however was excellent value, with competent, informative drivers and guides. A great way to see the mountains, villages and countryside.

We paid for a trip to the Minoan ruins (Palace of Knossos). It would have been cheaper and better to take a taxi to/from the hotel and organise ourselves. If you do visit the site, try to go early/late to avoid the worst of the crowds and sun.

All in all we enjoyed our two weeks and found the hotel to be pretty good - it is clean and well kept with generally friendly staff.
