book in advance?

by mayasmin

Should I book, in advance my ferry/catarman transportation from Heraklion to Santorini? I don't care about the time, or how fast the ferry/catarman is, but I need to get into Santorini on a specific day - a Sunday at the end of July.

Thanks a lot!

Yes, definitely book in advance or take a chance on the ferry being full on your travel date. It may already be.

Re: book in advance - too late

by Ouzone

You are too late to do a booking for the Sun 27 July. However there are 3 catamarans on Sundays, the Flyingcat 4, and two Seajets. So you have a very good chance of purchasing tickets whilst on Crete. A lot more capacity than in previous years.

Travel Tips for Crete Island

!!!:excepted knossos and hania, avoid north coast

by cbeaujean

if you prefer individual tourism, leaving heraclion,go and visit south coast....
(even in may!...I cannot imagine july or august...) ecology doesn't exist ...in the smallest village you cross, you find,at least, one unclaimed car or van along the main street or avenue...

Deserted beaches

by AndyRG

There are so many really unknown or with difficulty accessable beaches... Especially in south Crete, at the Libyan Sea (Africa is close...), you can find such forgotten beaches...
Do you have a tent?

Cover charges for meals

by AcornMan

There was almost always a cover charge for the meals we ate on Crete, something I don't recall seeing on Santorini, Naxos, Aegina, or in Athens. It was typically anywhere from 40 to 80 cents, the idea being, I suppose, that it pays for the bread, water, raki, and dessert (so I guess the raki and dessert aren't really free after all). Many menus list the cover charge, and it's always on the itemized receipt you'll receive after your meal. Just look for "KOYBEP" on it.

small private beach east of Georgioupoli - part 1

by Jawnuta

There is a small private beach east of Georgioupoli we like to go to. In order to get there you have to look at my GoogleEarth picture where I tried to "dot" the very narrow road to the beach from National Highway. We love that tiny beach because the water is great, the sand is nice, view is fantastic (you can see the whole Georgioupoli to the west). There is only several umbrellas and a small taverna serving casual Greek food. There is also small gazebo with a bar and a very nice Bulgarian bartender. The bathroom are always clean and there is always plenty of parking space. The town of Georgioupoli with all the hotels and tavernas is also close by. The beach is also great if you are staying in Rethymno and you don't like crowded city beach. It is only 15 min drive from Rethymno.

PHAISTOS

by Jawnuta

Phaistos (Öáéóôüò, Phaestos, Festos), was an ancient city on the island of Crete.

Phaistos is located in the south-central portion of the island, about 50 kilometres south of Heraklion.
It was inhabited from about 4000 BC. A palace, dating from the Middle Bronze Age, was destroyed by an earthquake during the Late Bronze Age. Knossos along with other Minoan sites was destroyed at that time. The palace was later rebuilt toward the end of the Late Bronze Age.

We came across Phaistos on the way from Matala to Agia Galini. You have to be careful not to miss a sign, just pull over each time you see parked rental cars or a parking with nice overlook (view point). Phaistos is exposed to sun so it is not a good idea to go in the middle of that day when sun is really strong. There is also small convenience store with gifts, ice-cream, water etc.
