Traditional Crete

Its a bit out of the way but well worth it. This has been set up as a traditional Cretan village in a lovely, quiet setting. The rooms are huge and many have great views. They also offer a show with a traditional Cretan wedding and dancing on certain nights.

Arolithos Village

by hikerroeland

Those anyone know if Arolithos Traditional Village (Close to Heraklion ) is just a hotel or if it is a village??? Is it nice to take photos and is it interesting to go a few km out of the way to visit it??

I have not visited Crete but the relevant website (which has a lot of information) states the whole thing was built in 1985, on pastureland, to estabish 'a Traditional Village that would reflect many aspects of Cretan tradition'. The materials etc were collected by the owner.

Although it is private holiday accommodation, there are workshops (blacksmith etc) and a museum. It seems to me that it functions in the same way as an open-air museum would but does not have original buildings which have been renovated or reconstructed from elsewhere. Rather like Portmeirion, in Wales.

Perhaps another VT-er has actually visited and can give an opinion on its interest value.
