Sunsets in the South....
by nickandchris
We have stayed in a few locations on the south of Crete and the sunsets are memorable. I am a real sucker for photoing and video-ing sunsets and my family get rather bored as I stand for hours filming. Later, they are even more bored when they are forced to watch the action replay on video!!! Sitting in the balmy October evening enjoying an ouzo or two and watching the sun sink into the Libyan sea. Amazing.
Prefecture of Heraklio
by Lilasel
The Prefecture of Heraklio lies between Lassithi and Rethymno. Its land follows the pattern of the rest of Crete mountains - bare at places, filled with cypress and oak trees elsewhere - plains, the most important one being that of Messara, fields covered with fruit trees of all varieties, sandy beaches and beautiful hidden caves such as the cave of Ilithias.
This part of Crete has been inhabited since antiquity and it is the richest part of the island in terms of archaeological sites like Knossos, Phaestos, Malia and the exhibits that can be viewed in the Archaeological Museum of Heraklio .
Monastery Life
by janetanne
There are many monasteries throughout Greece, but Crete is especially famous for its lovely religious retreats. Around Rethymnon, you will find several, among which is Agia Irini, a newly built monastery for women. The women who live there all seemed to be fairly young and the gounds were immaculate and flowing with flowers and trees.
It is customary to visit during proper hours, that is early in the morning and usually after 5pm til closing. Be sure to check the visiting hours as it is frowned upon if you disturb the solitary time that these unique dwellers require.
As I was waiting for the church to be opened by the 'Kalogries' as they are so called in Greek, I happened to see an opportunity for a unique 'artistic' photo which I thought would be quite harmless! Needless to say, one of the Kalogries saw me and very angrily slammed the window shut while at the same time shouting, "did I say you had permission to take my photo?" I certainly had meant no harm and the distance was so far that the girl's image was not clear enough for later identificaiton. So, the lesson here is to be very careful about taking photos in such situation. Be sure you ask first, or at least be inconspicious as possible. In most cases, it is not allowed to take photos inside the churches with flash and sometimes not at all.
Well, I got my photo anyway...what do you think?
Water, water, water
by bpwillet
If you are doing any hiking around Crete you will definitely want to have some sort of daypack with you. The hike towards Tripiti and other areas around Crete require good set of hiking boots. The rocks are very rough in places. But you also may want some sort of water shoe if you are bouldering around rocks near the shores. As many rolls of film or batteries that you will want and need the landscape is incredible! A polarizer may also be necessary. The sun is quite powerful. Water! You will definitely want to bring as much water as you are willing to carry. The trails are long and quite secluded. But your cell phone should work just fine!
Diktina
by felix.austria
NOTE: Tourists can go to Diktina by boat during the high season. You have to ask for the schedules.
We were there with our enduro motorbikes beginning of June. The road out to this bay is very uncomfortable for any other vehicle, but for us, fun was increasing... And at the end, we reached this historic place with some excavations. We took a refreshing bath in the sea followed by sun-bath.
