Ferry

by roamer61

Which is more feasible. The overnight ferry, departing at 10:00pm at arriving at 5:00am; the daytime ferry departing at 2:30pm and arriving at 7:00pm? Or, would one suggest flying over land travel.

Re: Ferry

by brotherleelove

I always recommend flying, but if you take a ferry take the overnighter to save the cost of a hotel room as well as saving your daylight hours for the time ashore.

Re: Ferry

Thanks. Thats what I was actually thinking of.

Re: Ferry

I have taken the overnight ferry, it's the cheapest, and the early arrival means you can get to elsewhere on Crete on the same day. There's little to see on the way.

Re: Ferry

by Balam

I agree, definatly the overnight ferry if your on a Budget and it gives you all day to walk aroung Heraklion and find somewhere to stop or to go over to the Bus station (which is not far from the port, get off the ferry and turn left) and get the bus to somewhere else.

Travel Tips for Crete Island

Cretans

by Jmill42

Greek people as a whole, and especially Cretans are some of the nicest people I met on my trip. While Switzerland's people are almost too nice, too good to be true, Cretans just seemed at home helping you and being nice. Engaging a Cretan person, who for me HAD to speak English, was one of the easier things I did. They were always courteous and the service was above average, as far as European standards go.

Whenever you are in Greece and Crete, be sure to strike up a conversation with a local. You will never be sure where the conversation will go... or end!

Capital of Crete

by Lilasel

Heraklion is the biggest city in Crete (and fifth in Greece) with a population in excess of 120000. It concentrates most of the economical activity of the island, and is the main port of entry to Crete for the majority of visitors.
History is very much alive in Heraklion just like in most Greek cities. All around the old part of the city ,you can walk following the old Venetian walls that meet at a bastion, called "Koules", that dominates the old harbour of the city .

My Only Bad Memory of Hania

by Jmill42

This warning might apply to all of Crete, but I only know for sure about Hania, because I stayed there for most of my trip. The local men... sorry boys, love to ride their annoying little scooters up and down the street, over and over and over again. I know they weren't going anywhere, because I saw the same ones about 20 times. Apparently, making noise on their bikes is fun for them. Sometimes, they just sit there and reve their engine, either in an attempt to give me a heart attack, decide their life's plan, or discover the secrets of the universe; I'm really not sure. Either way, its a bit annoying... unless you have headphones! Bring a pair. You might need them.

go rock climbing

by angelobike

Go rock climbing in Capetaniana, Aghiofaraggo, Aghios Nikolaos, Sitia. Visit www.climbincrete.com for more details.
You can climb almost all year round.
Crete is also a paradise for canyoners. There are hundreds of canyons to explore. Some of them Like Samaria gorge is just hiking but there are many others that the canyoners will love. Many cascades, narrow passages, unique places. The most famous is the gorge of Ha, Arvi etc. Visit www.canyon.gr for more details.

small private beach east of Georgioupoli - part 2

by Jawnuta

July 2007
We went to our beach again and we could not recognize it. It was totally different beach. Supposedly winter storm did so much damage to it, the owner rebuild few buildings and made few changes.
Our Bulgarian bartender was not there anymore.
Beach was more crowded and larger ( I man greater distance between water, your bed, and cold beer!).
One positive change....the food was fabulous!!!
We had fantastic fried zucchini of a size and color of 50 Euro Cents.
Great home fries, and nice size Greek salad. Beer was colder than last year.

So, YES it is still a nice beach. You should still go, and park your car and eat nice lunch, but the beach stretches for miles, so you can walk and find your own favorite beach chair and umbrella......
