More about Galaxy Hotel

reconsideration

I wrote a cruel review following a problem with one of this hotels receptionist - (didn't call a taxi and we almost missed our boat)
I thought I should write to say that I had a phone call today from the manager/owner to apologise. He told me that he has adressed the problem and seemed genuinely concerned about the whole affair.
Very pleasant chap and would probably consider going back to the Galaxy as it was pretty good otherwise!

Hmmm

I have to say that the room itself was ok. The problem was that the bar across the road was VERY noisey. It didn't help that the FIA final was playing but after walking 14km through the Samaria Gorge we needed our sleep!

The bathroom was clean as was the rest of the room.

Most of the staff were great! However we asked at the desk about a Samaria Gorge tour, but was told but the unhelpful lady that it didn't run on Wednesdays. We went down to the bus station and found another tour that was running on Wednesday. I understand that hotels have affiliations with tour companies but the lady we spoke to wasn't that nice.

Once we booked into our tour we asked if we could have breakie at 5:15am. When we came down the next morning a lovely breakie was waiting for us. Very happy with it!

Galaxy disappoints

Look elsewhere in Heraklion.
Although we were the only guests there at check-in, the front desk couldn't be bothered to help us with either a recommendation for a nearby restaurant or information about local transportation to Knossos.
The room was well worn and not terribly clean, and air quality in this supposedly non-smoking accommodation was not acceptable. This forced us to keep the sliding door to the balcony open all night and that, in turn, meant lots of noise.
Look elsehwere in Heraklion.

Good Hotel, Distant Location, Within Walking Distance of Everything in Heraklion

by TripAdvisor Member ARK_Travelers

This hotel is a bit out of the way, but with 30 minutes, is within walking distance of everything in Heraklion (note that Knossos is NOT in Heraklion itself). Because Knossos, the main tourist draw, is further away, a taxi or bus should be taken. But this is the best location to see Knossos from.

The hotel was good overall including the pool. The breakfast was outstanding and a Greek feast. The staff, overall were friendly, except for the receptionist.

Pros
+ Pool and Restaurant Scene are Cool
+ Breakfast is very large and has a good selection. You'll feel like Odysseus on his return from Troy!
+ Located close to everything and in a hip neighborhood. Great nearby cafes, gelaterias, and restaurants within walking distance.
+ Clean rooms and bathrooms.

Cons
- They advertise a sauna but there is none. It's a scam. Still the hotel is worth the stay.
- Need to walk to the city center (about 25 minutes away) and then hop a bus (about 45 minutes atleast) to get to a decent beach. But the Greeks love there beach and its a lot of fun. We went to the beach just east of Heraklion - can't remember the name but it was shallow very far out and nice.
- The Receptionists are really rude at the main entrance. One of them is also unhelpful.

Overall a good place to stay however it's not in the city center. But if you value cleanliness, a decent location, and a hotel which can help you access Knossos this is the one.

Good hotel withing city limits

Booked throught www.venere.com.
Visited the hotel for a wedding in Heraklion for 3 days.
The hotel was recently renovated and granted a fifth star.
Please note that there is no parking facility at the hotel but you can find some room around the hotel (I did not have trouble finding all the days I was at the hotel)

Reception was decend and receptionist were polite. We were given our key and went to our room. I was travelling with my wife and my 9 month son. The room was small to medium. Just enough for 2 single beds and a baby cot. I had to move table and chairs to the side so we could place our two luggages however I was very clean and new. Decoration was smart and modern with an lcd tv with wireless internet and games and inhouse paid movies. Cost however was too high(12.5eur/ movie). Mini bar also was high.

Room service was very good and quick. Water costs 3 euro (wow)!

The hotel advertises a big fresh water pool. Big fresh water swimming pool for a house- not for a hotel though. Did not use it but lounges were very nice placed and swimming pool was always clean.

Breakfast was for 2 or 3 star hotel. Very small however had nearly everything. A plus was that you could order whatever you wanted to drink from juices to iced coffee or espresso etc. Not limited to a filter coffee or tea.

The hotel is sound proof, a bit problem with the doors as they are too new and sometimes you could hear the other room. I had few problems with my key card but was replaced from the reception. Cleaning is done every morning at around 9 so you have to wake up early or they will wake you up with the vacuuming from the next room. There is not turn-up facility that I know of.

Hotel is situated in the city center. On a main road. City parks are about 1200meters away but a decent beach is around 10-15km from the center. We went to the park and city by foot in the evening as it was easiest than looking for a parking space. However you will need a car to visit other cities of Crete. Be careful as no good roads and distances look enormous. For 150km you need around 3hrs drive in a small curvy road (hehehe)

For the reason we visited Crete, a wedding, the hotel was perfect. 3 days however were more than enough in Heraklion.
