Gramvousa peninsula - alternate route

by plasmation

Hello, is there an alternate route back from the Gramvousa peninsula, either on the west coast or on top of the hill?

I managed to find the answer myself: http://www.summitpost.org/pirates-in-the-mediterranean-a-rocky-scramble-in-crete-s-wild-west/310132

Travel Tips for Crete Island

Since it's a big island you have to rent a car and explore it by yourself. The northern part is very very touristy and the prices are higher. Personally, I loved much more the southern part where the locals are more friendly and the nature is wilder. I also believe there's never a problem to rent a room for a low price. Try Mirtos (south) or Kato Zakros (east). I stayed in Stalis (Stalida), squeezed between Hersonnisos and Malia, at the Panorama Hotel - lovely family run hotel with pool, pool bar, restaurant, ... The best restaurants: Ellas and Yannis. Islands, smaller and bigger...

My Own Prince of Lilies

by RoyJava

Crazy with symbols and all of its whicked interpretations I got lucky with my own disco Prince of Lilies, next to the sacred Snake-Goddess. This Minoan Crown Prince took care of a lot of mysteries not yet solved ... so ... ... ...

Priestly Crown Prince Get your own Prince Of Lilies whenever on Crete, and remember the island in a disco way!

Rethymno

by Lilasel

Rethymnon is the capital of the Prefecture of the same name and it is built between two other large cities of Crete. In the east is Iraklion (80 km) and to the west is Chania (60 km).
It lies along the north coast, having to the east one of the largest sand beaches in Crete (12 km) and to the west a rocky coastline that ends up to another large sand beach after 10 km.

The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating from the 16th century, arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, small Venetian harbor and narrow streets.
There is always fresh fish to be found in the tavernas around the harbor.

The Iron Bars

by Balam

The story goes that the iron bars sticking out from the roof of many Greek houses are exemptions from taxpaying, as long as the house isn't yet finished but in fact they are exclusively there for the purpose of a later extension of the house. They have NOTHING to do with exemptions from taxpaying . (It's a good story though)!

Unfinished buildings is a common sight in Greece. The reason is that greek people build what they need today and leave the rest of the building unfinished for the future. It may seem that the Greeks are constantly building houses - and they are. Most Greek parents build a house for each daughter, but not for their sons (as they are supposed to marry a girl who will get a house from her parents). Often it is also the daughter that inherits her parents' or grandparents' house when they die.

Great walk through the Imbros Gorge

by Libi73

8 km of awesome landscape. Park the car in Imbros and there you see the signs to the beginning of the Gorge. Wear comfortable shoes because of the many loose rocks. At the end you can get a taxi for about 5 euros pp. You can have a wonderful lunch in Imbros.
