The prefecture of Hania
by call_me_rhia
Hania is the second largest town in Crete and its the regional centre of the Prefecture of Hania, which covers the western part of Crete. The most important places to visit are - aside the city of Hania - the beaches of Falassarna and Elafonissi, the Samaria Gorge, and the villages of Loutro and Sougia. Most definitely the beach of Elafonissi - for the shallowness and the colour of the sea. I found it much nicer than some tropical Asian beaches. When we were told that the beach was pink in colour, we did not believe it - until we got there - and it was true! Tiny grains of fragmented pink shells lie all over the sandy shore - giving it a magic purple-ish halo
Samaria Gorge
by Kamils
Samaria Gorge is a national park, one of the most spectacular natural parks in Europe. Starting south of the settlement of Omalos, 42 Km south of Hania, spans for 18 Km as far as the south Crete coast.
Respect Local Customs

- Respect local people and especially the elderly ones,
- Show interest in whatever seems to be important to your hosts,
- Learn a few basic words in Greek - local people will love you :-)
- Remember: freedom and local identity are most vital to the people of Crete!
Rix outdoor activities
by Cheesegirl
We had a great time, biking the Lassithi plateau for a few hours. Everything was there: helmet, water, supportcar, good and friendly guides.... And I can tell you, it wasn't easy for Rik and his crew to keep 25 women going... They did a great job, we had a very nice lunch in the middle of nowhere and really experienced Crete in another way. You can do different tours, from light (the Lassithi tour we did), to middle (Crete pure, with a swimstop) and heavy (Sporttour, for fit people only).
Rix also does skate tours and walking trips! Depending on the weather, wear something with long sleeves, flies can get annoying. If it has been raining, wear clothes and shoes you are not too attatched to, the red mudstains won't get washed out. And ofcourse bring good sunscreen, you are quite high, sun burnes good up there!
Priestly Crown Prince
by RoyJava
See the famous Prince Of Lilies ... an old painting of the Minoic period, found at the Knossos Palace. Still kept at the Archeological Museum of Crete, of which a replica has been placed in the Knossos Palace. A wonderfull painting created long before the Birth of Christ.
His long black hair, his great worked-out body, his crown with peacock's feather, his golden arm-bracelets, and his mini-skirt describe a male figure of a priest. A King-priest, well... here a Crown Prince. One does not know yet what he is doing. The Cretan script has not been able to translate in understandable tellings ... yet!
And the sobriety of Western people still suppose a king-priest is out of myths, and so a sort of gibberish ... double Dutch ...
I met this priestly Crown Prince and wondered why he looked so modern, so trendy
