Hi all,
Is it possible to start a cruise from Heraklion port, perhaps a three or four day holiday....I have looked at many sites but they always seem to start in Pereaus.

Hi Derry, you can take a one day cruise to Santorini & trust me you would not regret that. It's one of the most picturesqu places i have ever been to. The link is : http://www.windmillstravel.com/tourone.php?id=80&destination=2&destinationtype=region

Thanks for the replies but these are essentially ferries, what I want is a laid back cruise for four or five days.

Travel Tips for Crete Island

Crete Rethymnon

by alectrevor

A good long walk is from near main bus station, on the sea road past the Politechniou, round the headland called ring road under the Fortress to the Venetian Harbour,on to the Waterfront pass the Marina to the beaches. Returning just turn into the town streets, back at the harbour. On the map the bus station is bottom left and the Beach bottom right

Crowded beaches

by AndyRG

This beach, Preveli, used to be a quiet one, but the... civilization came here too. At the nearby beaches of big northern cities, there are thousands of umbrellas under the hot sun...
It is your choice where to go...

Mess

by gale.blog.pl

This tip relates not only to Crete but to all Greece. I'm very sad to say that my beloved country tends to be messy. It is often that beautiful patio gardens are treated by owners as heap of rubbish. I don't really know why they don't just throw the rubbish away.

Terrace at Festos

by AnnelieW

Next to the archeological site of Festos you can find what we think is one of the best places on Crete: the terrace! With a great view over the area, shade from trees and a cool wind, this is a magnificent place after a hot day in Matala and/or Gortys. It's selfservice so you can stay all day if you want, without having to order every half an hour or so. We sat and read our books (Nikos Kazantzakis: Christ Recrucified and Louis de Bernieres: Captain Corelli's Mandoline) for a few hours in the afternoon.

This terrace was actually more impressive to us than the archeological site itself (after already visiting Knossos). There is an Italian archeological school right next to it, on the top of the hill, and I even considered studying archeology, just to be able to live in this place for a year or so...

Georgioupolis

by Lilasel

Georgioupolis lies at the northern coast of Crete, about 35km away from Chania and 20 km from Rethymno.

Georgioupolis is built on the delta of the river Almiros. In fact it was called Almiros or Almiroupolis (city of Almiros) up to the beginning of the century when Crete united with Greece and the city took the name of the then king of Greece King George.
About a mile from the village on the way to Chania is a small hill, on top of which the ruins of the ancient city Amfimalla was built.

This is a "small" place with some charm and atmosphere, even though there are many hotels and places to stay. Much wildlife in the area (river and semi-wetland as neigbours). Turtles nest here and it is viewed by many visitors who return often, as a relatively unspoiled place.
