Matala is Heaven
We took a bus from Crete's port city over the hilly, wine terraced island, to the southern side. We ended up in Matala. One of the most quaint, simple, relaxing towns we have ever visited. Go there! It will change your life.

Does anyone know if there is a bus service from Chania to Ierapetra? And, if so, how do I find the timetable? Many thanks.
I did that leg with public buses some years ago. We had to change buses in Heraklion. If this is no longer true, I'm sure someone more updated will provide new info :)

Yes, it's as the previous reply, there are slightly more services in the summer, but that's basically the position. You have to change in Heraklion as I think they are two different bus companies. You may have an hour or so wait in Heraklion as timings aren't integrated.

Chania....
hmmmmmm...... A VERY beautiful town...
Chania is one of the nicest towns in Crete, with wonderful houses, parks and squares.
For more info about Chania just look at my Chania page;-)
A meal at a restaurant in Crete is often rounded off with a small glass of Raki or Tsikoudia. A colourless spirit made from grapes and similar to the Italian made Grappa, it is an acquired taste but I found it quite pleasant and has more of a "bite" to it than the more commonly known Metaxa.
The beach of Vai is located within the largest oasis of palm trees in Europe. it's a nice beach with clear water and a small islet not too far away from the beach. The water is quite shallow so it's nearly possible to walk out there - if it weren't for the slippery rocks beneath the water. The beach is a lovely pebble beach - the further you go from the entrance and car park (payable, 2.50 euros), the fewer people you will encounter. Vai is a nice place to swim your day away. sunscreen and swimsuit (optional). What's not optional is water shoes - without them it's a pain to walk on the beach and into the sea
Well, if you check out my page about Matala ,there is more information about this wonderful beach. It is the nesting beach of carretas and it means there is almost untouched nature. Such a beautiful place ...
