Hotel "Fantastic": More great rooms in Crete: Matala
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Great value rooms - roomy, airy, well equipped, with shower, balcony and fridge - run by the really friendly Stavrakos family.

Normally you'd stay clear of someting that calls itself "Fantastic", wouldn't you? But, in this case, don't!

Lovely garden, bougainville-hung balconies and a view of some of the strange sandstone outcrops round Matala, complete with goats. You are right in town, just round the corner from everything you could want, yet it is really peaceful - the sound of goat bells and the odd excited discussion wafts up to you.

This street has about half a dozen rooms places, and all looked of a good standard. The rooms don't look out to sea, however. For some reason there are almost no sea-view places in Matala.

Matala, with its lovely bay, makes good base for Phaestos and other sites nearby : see my 'wind came in from Africa' tip! for more information about it. I think, however, it is a place best visited out of season.

Coral and Poseiden rooms: Rooms by the sea at Kato Zakro
  • Tip Rating:

  • beach and taverna Kato Zakro - Crete Island
    beach and taverna Kato Zakro
    by Spincat

We've stayed three or four times in one or another simple room by the sea at Kato Zakro: a place we keep going back to.

There are 3 sets of rooms right on the sea - the Akrogiali taverna acts as 'keyholders' for these. Get there early to be sure of getting a room or try enquiring via the website. There are other rooms, further away from the coast - a nice-looking one near the gorge, but I think some others are really quite far away, and you may get 'lured' to them by the owner: see below!

This is quite a popular daytime desitination with tourists and sometimes parties of schoolkids. There is a Minoan palace here and a beautiful gorge with burial caves high up in its walls: good practice for some of the more challenging gorge walks - though not to be taken lightly itself. Lovely little rocky cove with a few fishing boats and goats on the rocks. I have a whole tip on the place.

The picture shows the beach at Kato Zakro: behind the Tamarisk trees is the taverna which acts as keyholders/agents for the seaside rooms (they expect you to eat in their taverna - this is no hardship). You can just see one of the rooms in the photo. For more pics and info go to:

    http://www.katozakros.sitiarealestate.com/

Important! Make sure you got to the Akrogiali taverna as they are only ones which offered rooms on the sea. The tavernas near the bus stop offer rooms that are not on the sea - some may be fine, but these are not likely to be in such a nice setting. And, take note, they may tell you that all the seafront places are booked: this is not necessarily the case - check * directly* at the Akrogiali. This is a small place so there is competition to make a living here!

Simple rooms, but clean and comfortable - lovely views from big terraces or balconies (mostly shared) looking over the moonlit sea.

Once the parties go, it is very peaceful - a few good tavernas too and something too called 'Amnesia Music bar' which is never open early in the season, so we've never experienced its charms - a slightly hippy feel to the place at night somehow, but not in an annoying way!

Crete hotels, pensions, guesthouses....: No reservations required!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Great way to spend your vacation on Crete is to make no reservations when it comes to the hotel.

...Well, if you are really that nervous or you are coming late at night book a room for the first night close to the airport , like Chania or Iraklion.

There is nothing worse than spending your vacation in a gorgeous place like Crete and stay in an ugly, cheap hotel in the middle of nowhere.

Remember, cheap hotels owned by older people do not advertise on the internet because they are cheap (they don't have extra money to spend) and owners don't speak foreign languages.

So don't be afraid, go to Crete, rent a car and find your dream hotel, or do as I do, travel from town to town and find your dream town with a dream hotel.

You can find a room for two in the middle of the summer for 40 Euro or lower if you ask owner to lover the price. They know if you will not take a room, probably nobody else will come and they will give you a good price.

It never took me longer than 15 minutes to find a room and I paid between 35 and 50 Euro in August 2006. I also never bargain, if the room wasn't more than 50 E and it was nice, with the bathroom and AC, I just took it. Few times I was lucky I got the whole studio for 40 Euro.

So, don't be afraid, DO NOT STAY IN HOTEL that looks nice only on the photographs!!!
See your hotel before you pay for it!!!!!!!!

The Cretan House: Myrtos - a home from home
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Simple rooms with fridge in a traditional stone building with a huge shaded terrace and balcony. Opposite the little museum and the old church. Maria provides a camping stove for making coffee, but there's a full kitchen on the 1st floor - complete with ironing board!!!!

Maria Daskalakis, the owner is a wonderful lady - little gifts of eggs and oranges kept appearing outside our door, and as it was the right time of year - piles and piles of mousmoula!

Artemis Rooms and Taverna: Beachside accomodation and excellent food!
  • Tip Rating:

Rooms are the standard Greek pine with fridge - but open the french doors and the view over the beach is amazing.

The Koulakis brothers are very welcoming and the taverna below has some of the best food I've tasted on my travels in Greece. Beware the Sfakian meat pie - do not share 1 between 2 people - this WILL feed 4!!

2 minutes to the beach down a rough path and at night the lack of street lights means the stars are incredibly bright. Go on, grab some raki and wander down to the beach!

Hotel Iraklion: Hotel Iraklion in Heraklion
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Cosy hotel but on the busy street of Herakleion, so keep that on mind. If you sleep like a log everything is ok. :) There is a TV, shower and climatisation included in the price. It is near the center, just around 5 min walking to Morosini fountain and the bus stop is right in front of hotel. So there is good connection to airport by bus.
