Artemis Taverna: The best destination in Crete
  • Satisfaction:
  • By barbara5 on September 6, 2006
  • We have stayed in Artemis Taverna any time we have been in FrangoKastello. The rooms are basic but well equipped and spotless. Most importantly in this part of the island all the rooms are air-conditioned, a blessing if you find yourself there in July or August. The view is a choice of the Libyan Sea or the mountain range behind. All staff are friendly, relaxed, polite and efficient. There is no pool nor is there a need for one when the shifting sands of the beautiful beach are a two minute walk away.

The adjoining restaurant serves simple, local fare, supremely well-cooked and tasty. Ask in the kitchen for that day's catch and take your pick of the freshly caught fish which will be simply grilled with some fresh herbs and the owners own olive oil. The end result with a fresh Greek salad is amazing. The kitchen is open plan to the restaurant so you can see for yourself the standards of hygiene. The adjoining restaurant toilet is always cleaned and spotless also.

The small hotel has easily the best location in FrangoKastello. It is right beside the castle and just a few minutes walk from the two supermarkets and gift shop. It is at the top of a small laneway that takes you down to the perfectly sandy beach in a couple of minutes. The water is crystal clear and warm.

Its best asset is undoubtedly the warm and friendly staff and owner.

For a relaxed unchallenging break there is no-where in Crete to compare to Frangokastello and in Frangokastello there is no-where else I would consider staying. if you want luxury accomodation then the village itself will not suffice. However if you want a real taste of Crete in a comfortable and very clean environment, there is no-where better.

    Australia 2*: Crete, Ammoudara
    ann_gro
  • By ann_gro on July 2, 2003
  • Spent 2 weeks in Australia hotel (Aug 23rd - Sept 7th 2002). It's a small family hotel wtih all the comfort a 2-star hotel should normally have. In fact there's one pleasant woman who is the boss and the receptionis and the cleaning maid and everything else. Her sons do odd jobs around like cleaning the pool, working at the bar, carrying luggage etc. The room was cleaned and the towels were changed regularly, the breakfasts were a bit odd (I couldn't look at boiled eggs and instant orange juice by the end of our stay), but nobody objected if we ate some things in the room, the woman even gave us plates and cups. There's no conditioning in the rooms but we were lucky to get a balcony facing the neighboring house so that the sun never heated our room.I have no idea whether the other rooms were overheated.
The beach is 3 or 6 minutes away (depends on what route you take). Lots of tavernas and shops around.

There's a really small swimming pool, a bar and billiards.. But who needs a pool with a magnificient sea like that!

    B & B: Halepa Chania
  • Satisfaction:
  • By scotthendry on August 9, 2006
  • We stayed ta the Halepa for 8 days at the begining of August. First impressions wre of a delightful nature as everything was exactly as stated on their website.
This family run hotel is nicely situated approx 10 -15 minutes walk to the old town.
The staff make you feel extremely welcome and will bend over backwards to help, the continental breakfast is above average for the area.
We stayed in the original accomodation which was very comfortable and clean, with a view of the well kept grounds.
All in all a very relaxing, quiet and well appointed hotel which made our stay in Chania a memorable one.

The hotels descriptive website is as exactly how it is

Camari Garden Apartments: So you need to Relax
  • Satisfaction:
  • By Sueky43 on February 6, 2006
  • This is the ultimate place to relax, unwind, chat to fellow guests and enjoy the sun.
Camari Garden Apartments is a family run hotel, and they really go out of their way to get to know you and look after your every need. The hotel is approx 42 rooms, with two pools, a shop on site with a couple of bars and a restaurant. it is approx 6km from Rethymno, and will cost you approx 7 euros in a taxi to get into town, Up the hill is Gerani Village an authentic Cretan village (ie, not done up for tourists), with bars, shops and you are really made to feel welcome, down the hill is a taverna and a lovely little chapel.
If you are looking for Hustle and Bustle and lively nightlife STAY AWAY. The accomodation is spotlessly clean with helpful and friendly maid service six days a week. Self catering facilities are basic but as much as you need. The food is excellent, and basically you can have whatever you want. Let them know the day before and they will get it in for you. Home cooked Cretan Specials are regularly offered for you to try.
The circular bar creates a friendly atmosphere that allows you to mingle easily with other guests, it will stay open as long as you want to carry on having a drink, often into the early hours of the morning.

This hotel has the most welcoming and friendly atmosphere we have ever experienced. Many people return year after year and you are made to feel very much, like a part of the family. You are always remembered, I only have to call and say who I am and Angela will know who I am, ask me by name how my children and husband are. Whilst this makes me feel very special, it is the same for everyone.
We have many friends from the guests at the hotel who we have met on return visits.
After a busy "normal life", with a hectic job and busy family, for two weeks I can just relax, take in some sun, a few beers, some good food and excellent company. Just what I need!!

Elena Apartments, Stallis, Crete Island: Nice cheap self catering accommodation
  • Satisfaction:
  • By lucybittles on July 27, 2005
  • Stayed here in May 2005 with two friends. Lovely apartment, small but had all requirements. Very near beach and shops. Owner very laid back. You need to buy your own loo roll and empty your bin! Nice area, eating out very cheap. Would suggest only way to go. i.e. self catering. Quiet area. Malia (next resort for younger people) only a bus ride away.

    Would recommend

No pool and the one you could use wasn't worth visiting but near the beach so no problem but watch the shelving shoreline. Bargain with the owners for the sun loungers and parasols

Elpis Hotel Bali: "Hope" we dont get evicted
  • Satisfaction:
  • kat-m
  • Updated By kat-m on October 13, 2008
  • I am really sorry to have to write this but people deserve to know the truth. Our airline/travel company collapsed 3 days into our holiday. The owner of the Elpis showed only that he cares about money. He treated all his guests appalingly, his insurance covered our stay and we were not treated as we should have been. Our bed was changed once in 2weeks and same with towels. On our last day he charged 35 euros to keep on the room, even though as I say he was going to claim right up to midnight. He removed umbrellas from pool area and closed down the bar before people had left and were sunbathing on the beds. Everyone felt a bit down and unwelcome! Poor show Demitri. By the way Elpis means Hope.

Golden Sun-: Adelianos Kampos Package Hotel
  • Satisfaction:
  • Updated By Sheefy on June 17, 2006
  • My fears of being stuck in package holiday prison, stranded from any thing of note in a faceless and identikit resort,m were slightly unfounded, but only just. Hotel, has a three star rating - jury is out as to whether it should warrant this. Set away from main resort area/street by a 10 minute walk from main road, including past a few private lands where you'll see goats (not as remote as it sounds) and chickens - this was the bread and butter for most people prior to hotel developments in late 80s. Some people would find this unbearable but feel it sets it apart from other hotels in that it has great views over the resort, away from the noise of the main road and great for watching sunset. Niceish pool for families, has a evening buffet which is great for those watching pennies but offers a very bland version of Greek cuisine - though salads are great (i don't think many people come to this hotel or resort for sampling Greek cuisine/culture) more to slap on sun cream and bake in the Greek heat. Seemed to be geared towards more middle age holiday maker/young families - not that is a bad thing - means there is not much noise at night - but this was early part of the season so could be wrong. For those of a aversion to European integration, it is popular with Germans and Russians it appears, which makes for a nice mix.

Great views over Adelianos Kampos and sea (the resort is not an eyesore from up above and so manages to compliments the surroundings - thogh in same breath it is pretty standard development found in Crete/ Greece and could have been anywhere).
