The place i stayed in Herakleio is very close to Agios Minas metropolitan church. The only problem i had was the clock bell, that every half hour rings!
I was very lucky in Chania, i found a very nice room in Lucia Hotel, that is in the center of the old port. The view? Just magnificent!
The apartments are situated right on the most beautiful beach in Bali - the beach is called Evita. The apartments are run by Mr.&Mrs. Spiros - great people!
It has a great view of the beautiful bay with a small harbour.
If you're stuck here as there are no more buses, this is the place to go.
as I said, centrally located, nice view of a minaret, nice staff (Nick and Manolis), a small terrace where to socialise..
very quite rooms, with view on the nice garden...or on olive trees ; 0,5km from sea,but it's the only condition to find peace and stillness...
good cretan breakfast...
at the bottom of beach road,a choice of sympathic restaurants...
OPEN from 1st of may to 31st of october.
nice pool, rooms with AC and...mosquito net...no groups at all!!!
clean room, balcony, pool with sunbeds, pool bar, good and rich continental or English breakfast at the Yannis restaurant across the street, sunbeds and umbrellas at the beach (30 m)
I made the 3 Internationnal Youth Hostels of Crete and except one they were just a great place to stay, really welcoming and socially open, interesting people from everywhere, in fact just the great youth hostel mood and ambiance you expect to...
The three are in:
Avoid the one from Heraklion, which is just untidy, crowded, noisy...In fact, reflecting the immage of Heraklion, which I didn't enjoy...all the more it is next to the airport, so if you love to see planes over your head all nite,,,
The one in Rethymnon is just brilliant. The staff is cool, Nick is great and speaks french perfectly.
You got everything there, internet, laundry, bar, key locks, good beds, and it could not be better located, just 2 min from everything but just outside the noise of clubs...
Rethymnon is a magnificent place so you could really plan to make a week in this hostel...6 euros a night and 35 euros for 7 days...
The one in Plakias is a natural environnement, in Olive trees you have your rooms...nice and relaxing...
Two greats and probably the best adresses to stay in Crete...
- The friendliness of the staff...
- the good feeling between hostel backpackers...
- the position of the hostels in their respective places...
- Don't forget that youth hostels is the best way to spend cheap and hugely socially rich holiday, meet great people, share many experiences...
WHAT YOU FIND IN A YOUTH HOSTEL IS WHAT YOU BRING INTO IT...
If you plan to see the Elafonissi Island, you should overnight in Paléochora ( see my Elafonissi guide ). You have a great beach in Paléochora too ( picture... ).
When you jump off the bus from Xania, walk straight on for 2 minutes till you see a coffee with a big METAXA pannel, where they sell breakfasts, souvlakis, coffees, metaxa, ouzo, etc...
Enter this place and ask for Evangeli, if he is not sitting on the terrace already ( a typic greek old man, very kind. He will come to you if he sees you look for sth in the corner.
I went there by intuition but was just right.
He brought me to great room close to the beach with big bed, shower, balcony, mosquito pad window, everything really clean and charming, in a quiet place...
double room around 20 euros but worth.
A nice place to stay at least 2 nights to get one day in paléochora and one on Elafonissi...
Fridge for you stuff from the market, brilliant showers, rooms in wood, very nice and welcoming...
For exploring the Samaria Gorge and White Mountains the ideal place for accommodation is the Kallergi Refuge. Situated some 3 km from Xyloscala (at the top of the Samaria Gorge) at an altitude of 1680 metres. It commands spectacular views of the neighbouring peaks and over the Omalos Plateau.
The Kallergi Refuge is run by Austrian mountain guide Joseph Schwemburger.
Facilities are basic, bunk beds and limited supply of hot water. For the sake of water conservation a flushing toilet is availabe for use during the evenings only, during the day the infamous "Long Drop" toilet must be used. How does one describe the Long Drop loo? Well basically it is a shed built on the edge of a sheer cliff with a bench with a hole cut into it ..ah I think you can guess the rest! Great views though!
Accomodations come in various sizes and prices. From luxery resorthotels 'til simple studios and appartments. Chersonissos is a bulk-touristic place. Here is an enormous cluster of hotels, pensions and rental appartements. Therefor prices here are low due to competition. Also other touristic services are plenty and relatively cheap (restaurants, discotheques etc.). Package-travels are best buys anywhere in Europe and leave thereby the excursions or transportationrentals away. They are much cheaper on the island itself.
We stayed in a little family hotel up the hill in Aghia Galini. Unfortunately, I forgot it's name. Coming from Heraklion and entering Aghia Galini, it was on the main road going down to the centre opposite Hotel Areti (this I remember because the name is on one of my pics :-)).
When having a room at the back, you have a beautiful view over the sea with nice sunsets.
