This page gives you boat access and info:

http://www.koufonisia.net/koufonisia-travel.html

It suggests you go from either Piraeus or Naxos.

http://www.greekferries.gr/

will give you timetables and offers online booking.

Thank you very much, but I mean little Kouufonisi island close to Crete, no the one close to Naxos.

Sorry......:-(

As you are going in October, I think you may need to make private arrangements with a boatman in Makrigialos.

I doubt this trip will be running:

though you could always email them.

Hi,

No the boats to the island have been banned from taking people over this year, the authorities are most likely looking into cordoning off the roman ruins. While it is not prohibited to go ashore there I think the ban is partially down to the capacity of the boats, the main one could hold up to 100 people, so I was told, and there are no proper facilities on the island to cater for that amount of bodies. However, if you are in the area it would be no hard to ask around in the tavernas, I was told that if they get enough bodies to make it feasible a small boat trip can be organised.

When it rains in Crete...

by gale.blog.pl

Several times I watched rain in Crete and it was a unique experience. As you can see in this picture, rain comes from one or two small clouds and it looks like a shower - there is no rain around.

Bullet holes in road signs.

It is no secret that Cretans own guns, especially in mountainous areas. Road signs are easy targets and you will see many of them that resemble swiss cheese after some shooting practice. Cretans usually fire their guns at weddings and other celebrations.

Do not take too much!!!

by Jawnuta

Backpack or a case on a wheels so you can easily roll it from your car to the hotel.
If you are planning to bring back with you Cretan oil, get a small cardboard box and some bubble wrap and plastic bags. You don't want the oil to spill all over your summer dress and on the way in it is a great way to transport your shampoo and stuff to prevent it from smashing on the airplane. Don't take too much and make sure it does not wrinkle.
Flip-flops, hiking shoes if you are planning to hike, shorts, skirts, a nice summer dress for a night out. Hat, sunglasses, an extra towel for the beach. MOSQUITO REPELLANT!!!!!!! Or forget about going out at night.
Sun tan Lotion and some after sun tan......however I usually use fresh local oil of olive!!!! It is the best. Take something easy and fast.....it is so hot and you are most likely under the influence of raki so forget your fancy equipment, leave it at home. Take the small camera you can hold it in hand or in your purse or pocket. I always take few towels, since hotels don't offer too much.
You can rent a beach chair and umbrella, for few Euro.
If you are planning to save some money or you have few kids with you, bring some foldable umbrellas with you on the plane or find a beach partially covered by the trees.
Small carry-on cooler is also not a bad idea. You can freeze some water at your hotel freezer and use on the beach all day. We usually carry cooler filled with frozen water and fresh grapes for lunch. Credit cards - you can use them in hotels, restaurants, stores.
Debit Cards - you can withdraw a cash every day, so you don't have to worry to carry too much cash with you.
There are ATM (Cash machines) everywhere and every popular restaurant accepts credit cards.

The westernmost beach of the nothern shore has a fantastic beach, but no proper tourist fassilities. It is an excellent place for real travellers, located close to a yet unexplored archeological site.
