NAGA - Snake-Goddess
by RoyJava
The island of Crete has been a great source of information during my stay. Studying myths, legends and sagas Crete is one of the best places to do research. Because the whole island accomdates so many antiques out of the world of phantasy, which manifest itself in her material arts.
Well,... maybe too tricky, maybe the right link, but the faience figurine identified as a "Snake Goddess" found on the Aegean Island of Creteat Crete is a beautifull female figurine. The most apparent characteristic of Minoan religion was that it was polytheistic and matriarchal, that is, a Goddess religion; the Gods were all female, not a single male God has been identified until later periods. It is not easy to describe the nature of the Mother-Goddess of Crete. Recognize here a priestess of a very high position, when you look at her eyes and do notice all of the attributes. The snakes, the special dress, and the cat, which was placed later on her special headdress ... all point out a woman using symbolics out of the matriarchy. It will take too long to explain the development out of the Naga into the Snake-Goddess, though one could guess there is a very true connection ... I enclosed her in my heart. Thanks to Crete ...
Spring

Cretean spring is beautiful. After months of bad weather, relative cold and rains the plants burst with life. Crete becomes a blooming place and the fresh greens give a great shade against strong sun.
Take the Raki...
by bpwillet
Raki is an alcoholic drink which borders on battery acid. It is quite potent. Many bootleg versions are made but it all tastes pretty much the same. It is made from grapes after the juice that is used for wine. It is given at the end of every meal and is customary to drink one "shot" at the end to help in digestion. It doesn't go down very easy but that is part of the fun right? It is just polite to take some and say thank you. Especially when you dine in large groups like this one, it is a social thing. Greeks work on their own time. They have gotten used to many of the tourists who visit Crete but you have to keep in mind that they may not have everything on the menu and it may not get to the table as quickly as you expect. But they will bend over backwards to make sure you have every reason to come back.

by oriettaIT
In Crete Island there are many walking paths. One of them is the European E4 walking path, it cover the whole island and touch some of the most scenery landscape in Crete. Some parts are very harsh and aryd so make sure to well preparate your hike. Bring a well detailed walking map, good hiking shoes and plenty of water.
Balos, The road of your nightmares
by kat-m
Oh well, I should be used to the roads by now, and I was forewarned. As usual I just had to go. The road is a rough path climbing steeply up and around a peninsula with massive drops about 2 yards away fromt the car. The worst thing about the road is knowing you have to come back! On arrival at the end of the road there is a carpark and a canteen selling light snacks and drinks, water is most welcome as you have a bit of a walk to get down to the beach. What a spectacular sight! The view is stunning and the colours of the sea is unforgettable. An alternative is to go round the peninsula by ferry from kissamos, but we missed it. A very scenic and hairaising trip. See main pic on crete island page.
