beach or history?
The natural harbor of Eretria is a good place to visit as a day trip from Athens. It is located at the west side of Evia island, about 22 km from Evia’s capital, Chalkis. When I took the ferry from Skala Oropoy to visit Eretria I was expecting to the just another (kind of boring) seaside city. The good thing thing here is that Eretria used to be an important city since the ancent times so there are some nice monuments and sights to visit and see. Some of my suggestions are:
-The archeological museum that houses items of the area of Eretria
-The ancient theatre of Eretria of the 5th century BC
-visit the village Amarynthos for the Macedonan Tomb of the 4th century BC and some nice Byzantine churches
-check also the circular building of ancient Tholos of the 5th century BC, the House of the Mosaics with some nice mosaic, the ruins of temple of Apollo Daphnephoros or the ruins of the temple of Isis, the house of Konstantinos Kanaris etc
You can also relax at one of the cafes, swim at the beaches or just visit the island of Dreams, well organized for tourists. The island of dreams is an island close to Eretria full of pine trees. You can go there through the small bridge that is a link to the city of Eretria and enjoy beaches. I’m not so into this touristic stuff like mini golf, ping pong etc so I preferred to visit some of the archeological sights that to watch tourists having relaxing moments in front of their bungalows! :)
