Amazed
In reading an article about Heraklion recently in Sherman's Travel magazine, I was quite surprised to read the following:
"While there [Heraklion], visit the south coast town of Matala (about 1 hour and 40 minutes away from Iraklio by car), renowned for its golden-sand beach backed by cliffs with caves, where a small hippie community, including the singer then known as Cat Stevens, lived in the 1960s and 1970s."
I never considered myself a hippie and do not recall meeting Cat Stevens while living on Crete but I did spend a lot of weekends at Matala with one of my hippie lieutenants during 1971 and 1972. The beach was great and many of the people were crazy (mostly in a good way.)
