Travel Tips for Aegina Island
Aegina Mythology and History
Greek mythology tells us that Aegina was a daughter of the river god Asopus and the nymph Metope. When Zeus abducted Aegina, he took her to Oenone, an island close to Attica. Here, Aegina gave birth to Aeacus, who would later become king of Oenone; henceforth, the island's name Aegina.
It reached the zenith of its development during the VI-th century BC, when, as an independent power, it was the first city in Greece to mint coins.
The island made an important contribution to the war against the Turks in 1821. Aegina was the seat of the first Greek government, under Kapodistria (Russian Greek), before being succeeded in this role by Nafplio. It was the first capital of the New Greek state for almost two years.
Shrines on the road
When your driving around Greek Islands you will come across little shrines along side the road. From what I've heard these shrines are put there by family members of the dear departed one who lost their lives in this spot due to some kind of accident.
If anyone has any further explanation I would love to hear from you.
As you can see there are fresh flowers and an oil lamp that remains lite as a spritual connection with the dear departed.
The sanctuary of Aphaia
According to myth, Aphaia, who is identified with Britomartis, daughter of Zeus and Karme, was loved by Minos and, to escape his attentions, she jumped into the sea and emerged in Aegina, where she became "invisible" in a grove.
The sanctuary lies above the headland of Ayia Marina on a hill offering a panoramic view over the sea.

"Nice escape from the hustle and bustle of Athens"
For people who don't care for the hustle, bustle, heat, and traffic of Athens, the island of Aigina (or Aegina) can be a nice retreat. It is only a short ferry trip from Piraeus (especially if you take the fast ferry), so you can easily make a day trip out of it if you're staying in Athens overnight.
