Airports

by bronas

Does anyone know if Athens has more than one international airport? Thanks

Re: Airports

by Fluffy_bunny

Elefthérios Venizélos (Athens international airport) is the only one.

Re: Airports

by Fluffy_bunny

But there are 14 other international airports around the country. (i had to Goggle that)

Re: Airports

There used to be two airports in Athens, one domestic and one international, but that all changed in 2001 when Elefthérios Venizélos opened. Now all commercial passenger traffic uses the same airport and terminals.

Thanks for your replies, I was afraid I might be flying into a tiny airport 50km outside of Athens! You've put my mind at ease:)

Elefthérios Venizélos is a long distance outside of Athens, but there are frequent buses and a Metro system to bring you into the city within 45 minutes.

Travel Tips for Athens

Entrance to the Acropolis

by INSULARIUS

Unfortunately, for visitors like you, the ticket to the Acropolis is "one-entrance ticket"! Once you enter there, the ticket-collectors withdraw a part of the ticket, practically make it "invalid" for a next visit!

That means that you can enter as nany times you wish to the Acropolis, provided that every time you pay a new entrance!

Do not forget that costs 12 euros!

The guards

by AndyRG

Such a picture is a typical one for any tourist in Athens... The guards are tall, well trained soldiers and belong to "Proedriki Froura", the guards of the President of Democracy (it is honorary for every Greek soldier to belong at it).
They wear these traditional uniform skirts and pompom shoes and guard the tomb of the unknown soldier - it is behind them, at the central Syntagma square. The change of the guards there is remarkable...

ATM machines

by irvbur

Although ATM machines are to be found all over, the transaction is always in local currency. BE PREPARED. For example, do not go up to an ATM and think you'd like to withdraw $500 worth of local currency. You first must know the amount in local currency that $500 will buy. I always carry a currency cheat sheet when travelling. In addition to ATM transactions, it's also easier to bargain and make purchases.

For a cheat sheet go to to http://www.oanda.com/cgi/convert/cheatsheet

places like this can be a lifesaver!

by morgane1692

when you must contact your friends back home or check on your flights or make hotel reservations, here's the best place for it in central Athens...RENDEZ-VOUS CAFE, Voulis 18, just off Ermou Str. and Syntagma Sq. Not only do they have internet, they have yummy snacks and beverages, too!

Stray dogs in Athens

by Lilasel

Stray dogs are a problem in Athens. Seems they are everywhere and you start to consider them as city inhabitants and get used to cross the street together with them. Some of them are pets, some are former pets and some have never been pets at all...
I was always surprised how they cross the streets with such terrible traffic. I have noticed they are waiting for the green light but not because they understand they can cross, dogs are following pedestrians...
They are everywhere in old Athens, next to every Plaka's taverna just waiting for a food and looking for a shadow...
Sharing the food with them I understand the meaning of that gold quote: We are responsible for those who are tamed by us! http://www.greecetravel.com/mazarakis/wisdom/straydogs.htm
