Travel in End July or October ?

by Sarah8901

I am planning a family visit to Greece . Im not looking to party or take part in the famed nightlife of the Greek Islands , just spend my time sightseeing and taking in the beauty of the islands . The islands im particularly looking to travel to are Santorini and Mykonos . However I will be on a tight budget because the Euro is very high against my currency . Im hoping to spend 3-4 days traveling the islands , and a couple of days in Athens . So here are my queries :

a.) What is the best time to visit the Greece Islands ? Im coming from a terribly hot summer , so im really not looking forward to summers anymore . I want to be able to visit at a moderately cool time of the year , somewhere around October ? Also isn’t that the low season , so I should be able to find cheap accommodation / cruises ?

b.) Would you recommend island hopping – seeing 4 islands over a span of 3 days , stay in each island is around 4-5hours ? Or would you recommend staying at one place ? I ask because I don’t think I will be able to visit Greece again so I want to make the most of it , and especially be able to see Oia & Fira in Santorini.

Thanks everyone!

Hi

The best time for me is the second half of September. But if you're looking at less people, cheap prices and cooler weather go in the first half of October. I would definitely not do the island hopping - your schedule is too hectic. Santorini is a good choice for scenery. Choose accommodation with caldera views - Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia (you'll need transport staying in Oia) are best. Try Blue Dolphin Apartments.

Agree late September or October would be best, imo....less crowded, cooler, lower prices (not necessarily cheap though).

With only 4-5 hours you won't really have time to explore much of any island. Perhaps better to choose just one as a base (Santorini?) and then take a daytrip to one or two others nearby.

Your time is limited, you have to budget not only your money but your time also. If you have only 3-4 days for the islands (including travelling to and from), you can not visit more than 2 islands, no way. Besides, Mykonos and Santorini are the most expensive of the Greek islands and not too close to each-other. It is not so easy to find a direct boat between the two. I think you have to forget one of the two islands you have in mind and chose another island, instead, more near. Example: Mykonos and Tinos, or Santorini and Folegandros. In this way you will save both time and money. Besides, since late September and early October are out of high-season, not many boats will be available, making your planning more difficult. Double check your trip to and from the islands and book your tickets, and after this you can decide which one will be your second island to visit.

We visited Athens, Naxos Island and Santorini in March- it was springtime, and the weather was perfect. Flowers in full bloom on the islands. Its also a low season.
We enjoyed both islands- but Naxos is cheaper than Santorini.Good hotel pricewise on Naxos is Hotel Grotta. 80euros pn for the room.
You could catch a Blue Star Ferry from Athens (Piraeus)- takes 4 hours to Naxos. Stay one day & night- and get the ferry onwards to Santorini. Spend a day & night there too. The return trip from Santorini to Athens is 8 hours, but scenery is beautiful, and ferry is very comfortable. The fare, I believe, is about 110 euros return.

I wouldnt do more than 2 islands.

Return ticket to Santorini costs 64 euros with normal ferry.

Lynne's suggestion is nice. You need 30,5euros (Piraus>Naxos) then 15,50euros for Naxos>Santorini and finally 34euros for Santorini>Pireaus. TOTAL:80euros

Preparations for the Olympic Games 2004

Athens is nowadays a large construction area, since the next Olympiad will be held here next year. The Greeks try to give their capital a new face, but I doubt everything can be finished in time. There are many construction area in the whole city, full of machines, transportation is somewhat different due to this and is even more confusing. Prepare for crowds in streets, in subway, in tourist places, in shops. Athens is a very popular tourist destination throughout the year. While in Belgrade people wore jackets, in Athens people still enjoyed warm weather and the Sun and swimming in pools.

the city haven't a lot of atractives, but you must see the acropolis and the agora.
The acropolis, or high city, was building in strategic position, where you can see the egeo sea. It served as base of the militar defense and built as the great religiou's centre.
In the arcropolis is the parthenon's ruins, the agora, is the great market in antique athens and it's the civic social and administrative centre of the athenian life.

Cats Cats everywhere.
I only spent a few days in Athens, I was tired of big noisy cities and so escaped soon after arriving. The beautiful flower pots everywhere. I loved them, in front of every house.

Syndagma

Syndagma Square is what I consider to be the heart of Athens. It is a central place, close to everything and filled with restaurants, hotels, shops (it's where the commercial Ermou street starts), lots of people and lots of dogs! The ceremony in the tomb of the Unknown Soldier takes place here.
