A Filthy Hotel

Our room at this hotel was filthy. We arrived very late at night on a ferry from the islands. I was so tired I really didn't get a good look around the room before falling asleep. In the morning though, I couldn't leave this hotel fast enough. There were smears of bloody-looking gunk on the walls above the bed. On the bedspreads were several suspiciously bodily fluid looking stains. I didn't get too close. When I called the desk to complain, the clerk got rather belligerant, "Why you want to change hotel?! What's wrong with the room you're in!"

Thanks anyway. There's other places to stay in Athens besides this dump.

Unique Quality: Nice view from the roof, but the Attalos two buildings away has the same view, plus a bar. And it's cheaper.
Charming old fashioned elevator.
Cold air conditioning

It stands on its own

I've seen this hotel referred to as an alternative to the Attalos, and feel that designation is a bit unfair. It is good enough to be a destination in itself.

Set in a beautifully restored building, the Cecil provides clean, comfortable, attractive rooms in a great location near Plaka, Syntagma, the Acropolis, Psirri, and the Metro station. Riding in the antique elevator is almost worth the price alone!

The desk staff is friendly and helpful, and the breakfast is good.

One last thing, there wasn't a lack of hot water in the strong shower.

Unique Quality: The roof top garden provides a breath taking view of the Acropolis.

Excellent price and central location

Spacious, clean rooms, very kind and helpful front desk people, especially Alexsandra, who will be happy to give detailed information on whatever you need to know about Athens! Prices in Greece seem to be a lot better than in the rest of Europe, kind of like Portugal and Spain, which I think are generally cheaper countries for tourists.

Unique Quality: They have a cat named Lucy who's always at the reception or breakfast room.

Elevator chic!

Unique Quality: Check out the creaky, old elevator here...but it worked! One fun feature was if you moved your hand or anything else too close to the doorway while the craft was in motion, it would grind to a halt...to save your fingers or anything else from getting mangled, or worse, hmmmm....

A hotel bargain that isn't tooooo *cheap*

On one of the main thoroughfares in Athens, the Cecil Hotel is practically right on Monisteraki Sq...just a short walk to Ermou, a major pedestrianized shopping street, which leads you up to Syntagma Sq, another metro hub, the Acropolis and sooo much more.

Unique Quality: A great deal we found with the help of Matt Barrett's excellent greektravel.com site. five nights in a twin w/breakfast, only 47.50euros a night! Email the hotel directly and see what similar specials you may find. The staff is verrrrry helpful, especially Alexandra! And you'll love the great, antiquated elevator...maybe not so much the heaters which don't work the best, but if you don't go in Feb when it's bitterly cold in the shadow of the Acropolis, this shouldn't be a problem!

Don't miss the jam!

Old building nicely restored, large rooms with shower etc, simple buffet breakfast included. Close to the metro and some top notch bars and (not too expensive) restaurants. Extremely helpful, multilingual staff and friendly cat too.....

More about Cecil Hotel

Hotel Cecil in Athens.

by Kaglis about Hotel Cecil in Athens.

Price was approx. $75 (Canadian Dollars) including breakfast. The location is wonderful, within walking distance to so many great areas in Athens. If you're lucky you can get a room on the top of the building. You walk out your door onto the roof and have an amazing view of the Acropolis.

Well, I got relatives there so basically that has never been a problem. I heard there are nice little hotels in Thessalonikka (gotta check that out for you).
Oh, if going to Meteori, you will find the nicest little ... what should I call them, small motels, in traditional Greek style. I loved it...
As for Athens: the Hotel Attalos. It's a five minute walk from Plaka. It is next to the Monastiraki Flea Market and Metro Station (for getting to the boats to the islands). It is a five minute walk to the Acropolis and it is a block from Psiri, the hippest part of Athens with great cafes, ouzeries and restaurants at night.
Armonia Hotel,Avra Hotel,Cecil Hotel,... and ok, I'm not trying to get by easily but seriously, there are so many web-sites...

Hi

Yes we stayed there in 2002. It was gorgeous! Lovely building, nice staff, clean, spacious rooms. It had a nice roof terrace but you could only stand there. The hotel was in an excellent location.

Just a tip - ask for a room NOT facing the main street. Although bearable these could be a little noisy.

Take the Metro from the Airport to Monastariki. Then it's just a short walk.

Down the road is a huge meat and fish market - quite interesting (I hope you're not a vegeterian).

Hope this helps.

Hi There
I stayed in Cecil 2003. As previous person replied, yes a good clean hotel and nice staff. Good for being central to everything. Monistraki, Plaka, Acropolis, Syntagma, pretty much all tourist sites within walkable distance. Turn right out of Cecil, walk to Monistiraki Metro station entry, walk through the station to other entry, you come in Pissiri, dont be put off at first sight by the approaching streets, nice area and some good "local" Greek tavernas with Bouzeki music etc.
Yes, Athinas St is great for a walk to see markets and onto Omonia.
I am back in Athens presently, one of those things. You either "love" Greece and return or it is just holiday detination. Either way I am sure you will have a wonderful time.
Wishing you a safe and enjoyable time in Athens
