Very noticeable & well-located!

Every visitor to Athens cannot fail to notice this huge hotel. It's right on Syntagma Square, adjacent to the Parliament building (with the guards constantly manning it).

The square in front is big, and good for some relaxing, people watching, etc.

This hotel is very old and grand. Over the years many prominent statesmen, etc have chosen to camp out here.

You get great views of the Acropolis from inside. Nice restaurants and swimming pool. Decor is classy, and so is the service. As soon as you walk up the stairs, you sense that you have arrived at an esteemed place & will be well looked after ;-)

Unique Quality: Under construction....

Excellent Athens Hotel

I stayed in the Athens Grand Bretagne for a conference, and greatly enjoyed the excellent hospitality, luxurious rooms and spaces, wondeful food, great rooftop views and central location.

The hotel is located in a historical building on Syntagma Square, the very center of modern Athens. During WWII it served as headquarters for the British army. It was rennovated and refurbished before the 2004 olympic ganes.

The hotel is within easy walking distance from the main commercial avenues, the Plaka quarter, the Parliament and national Gardens, the Kolonaki museums, and more. The Acropolis is also reachable on foot from the hotel. The Syntagma underground station next to the hotel provides access to both the blue and red lines.

In the morning, having breakfast in the roof restaurant on the 8th floor with a breath-taking, sweeping view of the Acropolis was the best way to start our day. In the evening there is a rooftop-bar in the same place, with unbeatable views of the flood-lit Acropolis, which creates a special, enchanted atmosphere.

Service was excellent, and so was the food.

Athens oldest (modern) hotel

I didn't stay here but it is such an impressive building that I had to include it in my tips. The hotel is part of the Starwood Hotel chain and is listed as one of Conde Naste Traveler's 100 Best Hotels of the World.

While searching for accommodation in Athens, I came across the Grande Bretagne but it was way too expensive for me. It must be absolutely wonderful to stay here and when I have mucho moolah, I just might.

Unique Quality: It is situated in a prime location across from Constitution Square, the House of Parliament and the National Gardens. It is also walking distance to many attractions, shopping centers, dining & entertainment centers.

Wonderful Hotel

The first night in Athens we stayed at the Grand Bretagne and its defenitly worth every penny. Its a wonderful hotel with very ornate re-furbishing in all the rooms. Almost impeccable service.

I say this because my wife was sick with a stomach virus. They went out of the way to get a doctor. Anything that I asked for, like extra ice, thermometer and the doctor prescribed medicines were rushed the the room as quick as possible.

This is definitly one of the best room service I have experience at any 5 star hotel. A really wonderful hotel and extreemly helpful staff who go out of the way to serve you.

Unique Quality: Excellent personalized customer service from the staff. Impeccable service.

High Class

I think the Grand Bretagne is the most expensive hotel in Athens. Not that it isn't worth it. It's a very very nice hotel, and I would say definitely stay there if you have the money. It's right in Syntagma Square near shopping and great restaurants. Very, very nice.

Unique Quality: The restaurant is fantastic. Also, I believe they have drivers for guests that are willing to pay for them. You know, to and from the airport, city tours etc. (in a mercedes)

Grand Dame of Athens

Exquisite, like a palace. Rooms very comfortable, and staff very attentive to your every need. Well located across the street from their seat of government. Cabs at the curb will take you all over the city for a reasonable fare. Food was exceptional. Bathrooms were like a trip back in time, but very adequate. The tub was huge, the sinks were ca 1920, but magnificent. Large windows with beautiful views.

Unique Quality: Grand staircases, appointments like a castle.

Elegant but old fashioned

A landmark in Syntagma Square and situated opposite the Greek Parliament and the National Gardens. A bit old fashioned when I visited but still a magnificent hotel at a great location.

The Best Place To Stay

I've never stayed in this hotel but I heard that it's the best place to stay. It's been number 1 place for all Heads of State since it was built in 1862 and it's 1 of the best-known hotels in the world.

Centrally Located and luxurious

My husband and I were only in Greece for the weekend so we splurged on this hotel. It was late November so there were Christmas decorations, parades and so much activity and eye candy! The hotel was very nice, lovely marble bathrooms and nice sized rooms.

Unique Quality: The hotel decor had such rich taste. The location of it was great too. We walked from our hotel to the parthenon and the ruins. I was sad we were only there for one weekend!

Grande Bretagne: Is it worth the price for a slurge?

by david4455

Planning a trip to Athens next April and want to splurge a bit. Is the Grande Bretagne all it is made out to be? Is it worth the extra 100 or so Euros a night above other deluxe hotels? I wonder if anyone has any experience with the Athenian Callirhoe Hotel? Thanks

I was at that hotel several years ago, in 1995, and I was a bit disappointed because I had been at other hotels of the same chain and it did not seem to be really on the same level. However, I know that it has been closed for a while and refurbished. The location is certainly great.

Some friends of mine were staying at the Athenian Callirhoe. It's a nice, very new-looking hotel, staff were friendly, but mu friends said the rooms were not really as large as they look at any advertisement photos. They didn't have other complaints, though.

I think that, even after the reservations, the Grande Bretagne is overpriced for what you get in return. Have a look at the Electra Palace Hotel**** (18, Navarshou Nicodemou street). It is right smack in the middle of Plaka and I have heard excellent comments about it.
