Athens Metro System

by 123bosworth

Myself and two friends will be going to Athens in May. We are considering taking the metro from the airport to Athens. Do the metro signs (info and directions) also include English?

Thanks for replying.

Yes all the Metro signs (and those around the airport) are in both Greek and English and I think some of the info boards have a couple of other languages too. Greece is generally very accessible even if you don't speak or read the language.

There is also an Airport Express Bus (X95) to Syntagma Square that leaves the airport evey 20-30 minutes, 24/7/265. Buy your tickets from the kiosk outside Arrivals door 5 for about 4 euro each, validate the ticket inside the bus in the little machine.

You'll get a link to the metro website here. That way you can work out your route before you arrive.

I took taxis both ways for the airport, but that's just because I had a very late arrival and very early departure.

Both the Metro and the bus go to Syntagma. The bus is cheaper but takes longer than the Metro, especially during rush hour traffic. The Metro takes 45 minutes.

Travel Tips for Athens

A place to rest after sightseeing

by oriettaIT

After a long day of walking and wondering around the Acropolis area sure your feet will be sore and you will need to cool down. Right out of Plaka neighboorhood in the way to Parliament Squre you can find this huge shadowed garden where you can sit on a bench to find some relief.
The green will be everywhere as this very nice garden are thought to look kind of wild, there are pathway and flower area and also some bar where you can enjoy your refreshing drink. The paceful feeling, the quiet and the incredible amount of green after a long time in the dry Acropolis area (it was August so it was really dry).

THE ANCIENT CITY OF ATHENS / Olympieion

by matza

One of the most important monuments Temple of Zeus Olympios. It was tripteral octastyle on the two narrow sides, and dipteral eikosastyle on the long sides, that is, it was surrounded by 104 Corinthian columns in total. Inside the building, along the north and south walls, there was an additional Ionic colonnade. The temple was built between A.D. 124 and 132.

Changing of the Guard

by WillAntoniou

Everyone knows about the famous guards in the funny outfits in Athens lol. You may take pictures etc etc, but I would ask tourist to respect the fact that these are soldiers just trying to finish their required military service, so please just try not to make their job difficult. thanks

Serenity Found

There were nit-pickers like BPC and then there were those who found their own peace among it all. Mister Pensive here was oblivious to everythign around him. He stared down at Athens from atop the Acropolis and I click, click, clicked away.

I hope he figured out whatever he was trying to ...

Here is the classic view of the Parthenon at the Acropolis. It is what most people would envision when thinking of Athens. It is a sight to behold, even when sections are seen through restoration scaffolding!
