Accommodation, traffic, FUZZ, Einsturzende Neubauten...

by Zvrlj

We plan to go to Athens (for the first time), to Einsturzende Neubauten two-nights concert on the 30th & 31st of October. We are looking for a very cheap accommodation (the only "luxury" we need is separate toilet & bathroom). We also need some info about FUZZ club, possibilities of parking nearby, any info about traffic in Athens... Is any VTer going to go to the concert(s)?

If you want a hostel environment check the Student and Travellers Inn.

The cheapest rooms I know of are at John's Place Hotel, #5 Patroou Street, Telephone: 30-210-322-9719 (no internet booking, you have to either walk in or call ahead.)

Other cheap hotels: Metropolis, Tempi, Athos, Omiros, Central.

Since Brotherleelove has recommended a few hotels (including Central) you might want to have a look at my Athens hotel reviews- Both Central & Hotel Adrian were excellent value. I guess that October the rates will be lower too.
Traffic in Athens is a bit crazy- don't drive - there is good public transport, and in Plaka area you can walk to all the main attractions. The Acroplolis is 10 min walk from most places. And the markets, restuarants and main shopping area.

I'll be there the first night, I dont drive so probably I will go by subway (nearest stop is Tavros from what I remember).

Check a map first if you want to drive, you can easily park at the small streets off Pireos avenue. FUZZ club is located at Peiraios 209 & Patriarhou Ioakeim (if you want to google it), their site is very simple and has no info from what I see but there is a simple map (in greek)

Travel Tips for Athens

HADRIAN'S ARCH

by LoriPori

Constructed in 131 A.D. by the Roman Emperor Hadrian, as part of a wall separating the old and new cities of Athens. The 18 meter HADRIAN'S ARCHwas made of marble from nearby Mount Pentelikon and decorated in the Corinthean order.
You will find Hadrian's Arch at Amalias Avenue at the entrance of the site of the Temple of Olympian Zeus, just south of the National Gardens.

Take a trip up to the Acropolis

by vichatherly

A walk around the Acropolis is always a must everytime you visit Athens. I've only been twice, but it gets better and better. A very serene place where the history is awesome. How did they get those stones up that hill?

What Type of Column is That?

by Jmill42

You won't be able to come to Athens without hearing words like Doric, or Ionic columns. I thought it would be nice to give you some pictures of each so that you might be able to identify each type and maybe impress your girlfriend or boyfriend along the way.

The Parthenon, for example, is made in the Doric style. In fact most people say it is the most perfect example of Doric construction. Doric columns are easily identified, because they are the simplest. First, the column must begin on the ground, not on a decorative pedestal. Second, the top also has to be plain, ending only in a non-descript, smooth disk topped by a square block.

Temple of Aphaia

by JUNLI

Temple of Aphaia
On the Island of Aegina, there's the most beautiful and best preserved temple in the whole Greece, Temple of Aphaia, which is dedicated to the goddess Aphaia.

It's equidistant from the Parthenon in Athens and the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. Is there any logic behind it? Who can tell me?

Attica from above

by athenian80

This is a satellite view of Attica and Athens.Athens is notorious for its smog, known as 'nefos'.The irony is that this is on the account of the terrain of Attica:Athens is surrounded by high mountains and as a consequence the 'nefos' is trapped. When there's no wind the problem is worse.Yet,Athens is usually windy... A few miles far from the city center, the national park of Parnitha is a popular way for Athenians to escape for a while from the hectic rythms of the city.
