Hello to everyone
We are a couple from Italy and we are planning to celebrate the New Year in Athens. We have already reserved a room in the Polis Grand Hotel. We've contacted the hotel and they told us that they don't organise anything special. We know that the hotel is near to Plaka zone but we have no idea where to go to have a nice greek dinner. We are ready to spend some money (reasonable of course) but we want a really good food with music and may be (why not?) some greek dancing. Shall we reserve a table? And what is more important where? Thanks beforehand!!!
I would advice to avoid plaka area is a real tourist trap.It would be better to arrange a menu in a big hotel in syndagma square where you will have a great view of the main Athens place ceremony.Just to know the prices will be from 40-50euros till 150 plus drinks.i'm sure you find something in the following sites. www.kinggeorge.gr www.grandebretagne.gr sglycabettus.gr. if you wont find something more ask me more.
Near Plaka there is another area, called Psirri. There you can find many tavernas and restaurants with greek live music and traditional greek food. You may want to check www.athinorama.gr to see for yourself (a site that tours you to athen's nightlife). But you have to book early, because this area is very popular to Greeks.
thank you very much for your advice and for this site. the problem is that i dont speak Greek and this site is all in greek. Do you live in Athens? You speak this language? I liked very much the idea to go to a traditional restaurant and I would love to book a table for 2 there but how? who call? which restaurant and which numbers... If you can recommend me something more detailed I would appreciate itvery much.
I thought this site had an english versio also...Sorry about that..I found another one, Psirri online, which is also in english and has all the events of the area for the days of christmas: http://psirri.gr/english/
Check out all the restaurants and taverns of the area and pick the one of your taste!!Have fun and don't forget to make a reservation as early as you can..
