donkeys
by mindcrime
It’s no surprise that Hydra island is picturesque because there are no cars and motorcycles around. While other greek islands are full of bikers here you see only the lazy donkeys! These friendly creatures carry around the people to their homes but also all the supplies which means not only the luggage of tourists but also supplies for the markets (pic 1 shows a donkey full of bottles) and even construction supplies like woods etc (pic 2)
Another alternative are some hand carts, we saw one full of groceries and we were surprised of the speed of the young man that was pulling the cart. Usually, you can see many of these carts outside of the houses waiting… (pic 3)
There are some vehicles on the island, we saw 2 garbage trucks in the morning and there is also a fire-engine.
Hydra Port
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
The first time visitor stays astonished by the imposing Manors that are located to the harbour of the island. There is one main town, known simply as "Hydra port". It consists of a crescent-shaped harbor, around which a strand of commercial establishments (restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries) is centered. Almost all of them cater to tourists and locals (Hydriots).
Steep stone streets lead up and outwards from the harbor area. Most of the local residences, as well as the hostelries on the island are located on these streets.
The town of Hydra is built amphitheatrically to the middle of the north coast of the island, inside a close cove, which is being surrounded by huge rocks.
Today the port of Hydra is full of boats which anchor there.

IT'S CALLED MIAOULIA FESTIVAL AND IT IS THE HONOUR OF A GREAT WORRIOR OF THE GREEK REVOLUTION IN 1821. THE PEAK OF THE FESTIVAL TAKES PLACE IN THE PORT OF HYDRA ON SATURDAY NIGHT , WHEN ALL LIGHTS ARE GONE AND YOU CAN ONLY SEE A SMALL BOAT (MIAOULIS WAS THE CAPTAIN) THAT ATTACKS A TURKISH SHIP WITH FIRE... THE ATMOSPHERE IS REALLY GREAT ! IN COMBINATION WITH THE APPROPRIATE MUSIC AND FIREWORKS IS A SPECTACLE THAT YOU CAN NOT MISS ! ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS...
Easter eggs and candles
by hydronetta
Like elsewhere in Greece, Easter chocolate eggs are very popular.
You can find them in any size and all sorts of decorations (from cartoons, flowers to football team colors).
It's a popular present for young children and a nice decoration for Easter meal. Most of these eggs in many cases hide a small toy, so children are eager to break them (and eat them afterwards) and find out what they hide inside...
Also on Saturday night when in Orthodox church we celebrate Ressurection of Christ, just before the event all lights go off and people light candles. Many of these candles are beautifully decorated even with toys and as usual children compete for the best decoration. Nowadays most are readily bought from a lot of shops (like here in Hydra from Anemoni confisserie, see additonal pic
Russian Spirit
by Kuznetsov_Sergey
In 1770 when Russia and Turkey were at war, the Russian Navy flotilla visited the Aegean under the leadership of Aleksey Orlov.
In the house where count Orlov lived during Russian expedition to the Aegian Sea now there is a hotel "Casa Orloff ". The mistress confirms that in the house there are some subjects from furniture of the Orlov's epoch.
Unfortunately I didn’t find this house but I really felt “Russian spirit” in Hydra.
