Ithaka Coasts
by SirRichard
There are not many beaches around the islands, the coast falls directly to the sea, leaving just some litlle rocky creeks and a few beaches. Most of them, you can only go by private boat.
The best beaches in the island are:
- By bus: Kioni and Frikes (north), Dexa (Blue Flag, 15 minutes walking from Vathy).
- By boat trip from Vathy: Gidaki.
Gidaki Beach
by SirRichard
Gidaki Beach is a nice daytrip once you are in Vathy. There is a boat that takes you there in the morning and picks you up in the afternoon.
It is a pebbles beach with a little hut bar, where you can have lunch. And there is nothing else, none else but the people that come with you in the boat, and some ocassional stops of the boats that do the "round-the-island" trip, apart from the few private yachts that stop there for a swim.
Yachts
by SirRichard
At the left side of the main harbour, towards Dexa Bay, there is a small pier (where the big ferries leave) where many yachts park when they are in Vathy. I used to wander around in lazy nights after dinner to see the big boats...
Vathy, capital of Ithaki
by SirRichard
"A quiet capital"
This is a page about Vathy, the capital town of the Ithaka island. Ithaka is a small island in the Ionian Sea, west of the Peloponesse.
Vathy is a good basecamp to explore the island, as well as the main transport hub.
"The first view"
Vathy is one of the places you will arrive to if you come to the island by ferry. The other one is "Pissaetos", a small pier in the west of the island.
The town is at the bottom of a small bay, so its waters are calm and the whole atmosphere of the place is of a great tranquility and peace...
"... and the last"
Vathy is not a place to come for lively nightlife and discos. There are some, but the place at night is starry and quiet, and by day, even in summer, is not much more than a peaceful fishing village.
This sunrise will be the last view you have from the island if you leave in the 7am ferry...
