The Venetian and Turkish influence and culture mixed with the Cretan element is evident throughout.
Chania has "the old city" The old city hides behind the Venetian Horbour - or as the local call it "the old harbour"- 'limani"- “sandrivani”
The architecture is amazing and as it is heritage listed all buildings have kept their original touches!
"limani" is a great place to go for a stroll and take in the amazing views while sipping on a coffee! Or you could walk all the way around the harbour from the castle of Firkas were the town was defended from to the Mosque of the Janissaries. Built in 1645, the year Chania fell to the Turks and thus the oldest Ottoman building on the island to the Naval museum to the old lighthouse! Although you could catch a little ferry to a restaurant near the lighthouse.
Everything is relaxed - nobody seems to be in a hurry! The lively locals- at the foreign ear may sound like they are agruing- Relax- its the way the locals talk and the waving of the arms is merely a colourful body language - that no doubt you will note and possibly grow to love.
At night time during the hotter months "the limani" is one of the "happening places" in Chania. Both tourists and locals alike come here to enjoy dinner and drinks at the waterfront restaurants and bars followed by dancing until the early hours of the morning!
It is a common meeting place for the locals! When you live there you are almost certain that if you go for a walk around the harbour you will meet at least one person you know!
