After Crete was surrendered to the Ottomans, all the Catholic churches of the island and especially those of Chania (more than 20!), were confiscated and turned into mosques!
Finally and thanks to different "reforms" permitted by the Sultan, the first Catholic bishop of Crete, Aloisio Cannavo built this church in 1879, in order to serve as the Cathedral of all the Catholic population of Crete.
In 2004, the church celebrated its 125 years from its building with various events. The church is served by the Cappuchin Friars.
