Southwestern Crete
For those craving more sophisticated tourist facilities a short drive further east will bring you to the wide Gulf of Chania with miles of almost continuous sandy beaches colonised by sun-worshipping tourists of all nationalities. Apartments, small hotels, tavernas and bars line the beaches while just a few kilometres inland the countryside and the small villages remain untouched by the ribbon development below.
Exploration doesn't have to stop on the north coast as from here a drive across the White Mountains to the south coast village of Paleochora can be easily accomplished in a day. Perhaps driving south via Topolia, past picture book villages, chestnut forests and an awesome ravine, before emerging at the Libyan Sea ready for a swim. North western Crete still has plenty of virgin territory and local colour for those looking for a holiday well away from the masses.
