Kissamos Windmills: the windmills of Kissamos

by ardnas67

5 appartments build as a windmill. Near Kissamos, 1/2 hour walking, 1/4 hour from the rocky beach. Nice stay for children because of the beautiful swimmingpool. The appartments are not so big, the service is perfect, every two days new bedding and towels. The owner Gorgos is nice, but speaks very bad Englisch.

Nice pool, lots of noise from the crickets, surrounded by olive trees. Very nice area to make trips

Neli Studios: Nice people - great accommodation

by Elenitsa

The Neli is located directly alongside Chania's cathedral and consists of several interliked renovations. The studios are of a very good standard, quite spacious and tastefully furnished (not in standard Greek pine and white!) and the bathrooms are lovely (we even had a solid wood bathroom cabinet, with a mirror lit well enough for me to do my make up in!)

Plenty of wardrobe space. The "all in one" kitchen seemed to be well equipped (not that we used it - we went to Portes...see my food tip!) and there was a coffee maker - excellent for a longer stay. All rooms have balconies - ours looked over Isodion street.

The "common areas" are beautiful, cool tiles and old furniture, with photos of past generations of the owner's family (we had great grandfather on our floor!)

The location is excellent 10/15 minutes from the bus station and slap bang in the centre of town, so handy for all areas. If you are not an early riser like us, I do suggest you bring ear plugs, the cathedral bells start at 7am (we were there during a religious holiday!) and are VERY loud.

Hara is very welcoming and asked me what time we would be arrving. She was waiting for us in the cafe outside and despite it being only 9.30 am, we were admitted to our rooms straight away (this was mid June - can't guarantee that this would happen in high season!!).

I very rarely book accommodation in advance and was very wary - but I would recommend the Neli Studios without hesitation. We will be staying there again.

Nostos Studios, Kalyves: Souda Bay Views

by nickandchris

These modern studios were on the main road into Kalyves, with balconies facing onto Souda bay. At first, we weren't bothered by traffic noise, but as the holiday proceeded the road seemed to get busier and busier, starting around 6.30am.
The room was quite spacious for two adults and a 5 yr. old and the balcony a decent size.
The water pressure was good and the kitchen well stocked.

We were on the western outskirts of Kalyves and there was an empty beach just a few hundred yards away and we looked out over Souda Bay. We loved sitting watching the shipping movements and hearing the boats sirens and chug-a-lugging in and out of the bay. It was quite fascinating.
The only drawback was the fact you lost the sun from the balcony early and it was quite exposed to the elements. We would often sit round the front of the building early evening to follow the sun and seek shelter from the wind.

Isadora Apartments, Almirida: Good Quality

by nickandchris

These were first class apartments as far as we were concerned. Two bedrooms, a large lounge/kitchen area, oven and three cooking rings, large fridge/freezer and loads of cooking equipment. it was a pity we were only there for a week, we could have lived here all season quite happily.
The shower pressure was brilliant but the floor didn't drain very well.
We had a nice balcony looking out to sea and the village and we could sit round the back of the building for more shelter when it was windy.
The tariff was 25000 dx. (about £50) which we would never pay if we were renting a room independently.

Plenty of parking space in the garden.
The best feature was the fact that there were about 80 steps (we counted them and never came up with the same amount twice!) from the garden down to the little beach by the harbour. This was a real short cut to both the beach and the village. I felt quite safe leaving Philip to climb back up on his own.

My Advice

by snorril

Although I haven´t tried it I bet sleeping in some of these restored Venetian apartments is great. The Venetian Quarter of Chania is a wonderful place with narrow streets and these beautiful houses. Many of them have been changed into hotels and I would have loved to stay at one. We had a look at some (researching for our next visit :-) ) and they looked great. They were also not that pricey in late May about 50€ for a decent double.

The suites were outstanding looking and a perfect place for a romantic couple with some cash to spend.

Helios: Nice place in a bad setting

by snorril

We bought this package tour from Iceland and ended up on Hotel Helios, an apartment hotel near the coast between Chania and Platanias.

The hotel was very neat with a cute pool-garden. The only con was it´s position in a very tourist-centered neighbourhood ( in the very bad scence). The area was covered by hotels, rentals, small tourist-shops, etc.

This was my first package-holiday from Iceland and it was really funny being able to talk to waiters, shop-keepers and hotel staff in Icelandic. Usually when abroad these people greet me with Scandinavian or German but here it was just good ol´ Icelandic.
