Train from Katakolon to Olympia

by canadadel

We are 5 seniors who will be arriving in Katakolon by cruise ship on Sunday September 12th of this year. Our time there is limited . . .the ship docks at 7 am and we leave at 2 pm.
Does anyone know if it is feasible to go from Katakolon to Olympia by train? Can train tickets be bought in Katakolon? Do the trains run on time? Is it a long walk from the port to the train station? Is it a long walk from the train station in Olympia to the historic sites?

See your previously asked question. I pretty much answered that it would be advised to take the cruise tour to Olympia. Why keep looking at your watch, wondering if you can make it back to the ship in time, before sailing. With those short hours, take advantage of the cruise ship tour to see the most and know what you are looking at with a tour guide, instead of reading in a book or map.

Do I understand you correctly that you'll disembark maybe 7:30-8:00-ish and have to be back by 2:00 p.m.? Wow, that doesn't leave you a lot of time...

Take a look at the Olimpia forum (http://forum.virtualtourist.com/forum-427043-1-Travel-Olympia-1-forum.html) where similar questions have been asked. Note especially:

If indeed you are able to contact the tourist authority there, you may be able to learn to price of a taxi or hire car for the day...

In short:
- using the train is a slow option and depends also on the daily train schedule. Your time is valuable.
- a taxi would be an expensive option, since you have to book the same taxi for your return on time. If finally this is your choice, make a deal before geting in the taxi and try to find some company to share the cost.

THE CHERRY TREES
The best time of the year to visit Olympia is undoubtely April. The weather is mild, the place is empty, the rates are low, and the cherry trees are wonderfully flowered all over the place.

OLYMPIC GAMES
In this sacred place, every four years, the greeks organized athletic contests in honour to Zeus. This 5 days (during the summer full moon) were a period of peace, and an excuse to reunite all the greek polis, giving all this independent groups a sense of unity. According to legend, the Olympic Games began after a victory by Pelops against Oenomaos, King of Pissa.
In 1896 Pierre de Coubertain recovered the spirit of that ancient games (banned in AD 393) to establish the Olympic Games as we know them, stablishing the 1st Games of the Modern Era in Athens.

THE OLYMPIC STADIUM
Through this still standing arch the athletes of the original Games entered the main stadium, from which is only kept the playground. It was the place where the first competitions, a run down the length of the stadium (142,25 meters), were held.

Olympia Ceramics part I

by amsterdam_vallon

It's not the typical swim with alligators or anything like this but this tip is for the people who wants to see everything a site have to offer.

When I was walking in Olympia, I saw by a little window, a great roman time ceramic. The people are not allowed to go see that ceramic but me!!! I did it!!

For those interresting, this simple ceramic is at the end of the site near the Roman guesthouses, behind the Pheidias Workshop.

Try your luck!!!

Stadium entrance gate

This is a very special place. The entrance gate where you can imagine young athletes walking into the stadium full of spectators to compete for an olive crown and the grace of the Gods, the greatest acomplishment of all.
