Thermae Sylla Spa -Wellness Hotel (Edipsos): The Unique Real Spa in Greece!

by greekcypriot

The perfect combination of body and mind rejuvenation! Really impressed, we just returned from our 4 day stay at the Thermae Sylla Spa Hotel, - a hotel that gives life to the city of Edipsos. According to the “Conde Nast Traveller” it is considered among the 10 best Thermal Spas in the world and with honours and several other awards and prizes received, the Hotel is rated the Top Spa Hotel in Greece. It certainly meets the expectations of the extremely demanding guests!
Paying respect to the history and the past of the location the new owners have worked miracles here. What makes the hotel unique besides the highest quality of thermal waters and the excellent spa treatments is the amazing, professional and multilingual staff. The management seems to be doing an excellent job providing an ambience that guests will surely want to return. Guests are made welcome upon arrival with a fresh drink and you are treated like VIP guests from the moment you enter till the time you leave.
The interior furniture and decoration reflects a living culture dedicated to elegance and to the pursuit of calmness and relaxation. We had room #308 in the old wing overlooking the beautiful beachfront with Palm trees and the thermal springs flowing below into the see. The room was immaculately clean, well proportioned and comfortable equipped with every possible comfort. We had a surprise indulgence with fruit and a bottle of mineral water in our room the day of arrival. The bed was huge and provided a creative and sophisticate centrepiece, -only wished we had more time to relax here. The marble bathroom and luxurious toiletries can easily spoil the guests. The room is cleaned both in the morning and late afternoon and new toiletries are added. Towels and linen are spotlessly clean with bathrobes provided again twice a day. Everyone is seen wearing bathrobes and slippers throughout the day and only at lunch and dinner time you see people dressed in normal clothes.
Breakfast is excellent, -more than adequate with a variety of things to choose from plus healthy choices. I loved “galatopita” the milk pie from the island of Syros, and the fresh and thick orange juice as well. Coffee is strong and aromatic. The variety of breakfast is truly ample and it surely meets the expectations of its guests.
I would recommend booking on a Half Board basis and preferably through the website of the hotel as well. Products used in the kitchen come directly from the hotel-owned farm and the fresh ingredients and traditional recipes are prepared with pure virgin oil. I believe holidays can be spoiled if people have to search daily for other outer probably cheaper alternatives when there is a wide selection of dishes in the two restaurants of the hotel. So, why leaving the hotel for dinner or lunch when everything you need is provided here?
The new classical architecture is preserved in the new buildings which were additionally constructed some years back. We came across some friends staying in the new wing and they showed me their room which had a small balcony overlooking the high standard exterior pool. The mini market in the new building provides a wide selection of things to choose from.
Both pools are equipped with water sprinkler systems and underwater hydro massage devices that relax unbelievably and invigorate the entire body. Every night the two pools are emptied and refilled again. My husband, recently operated (50 days ago) on his knee and with an operation that lasted 4.30 hours he was walking by stick for support when we came to the hotel. He no longer needed the stick by the time we left the premises the 4th day!
Personally I wanted to combine my visit to the Spa with a new Guide dedicated to the city of Edipsos but I did not leave the premises not even to buy a bottle of water. I am afraid the whole procedure of writing my new guide will have to wait for another time! You don’t want to leave the premises believe me and the only thing you would want is “the time to stop”. I was thinking of this on every body or facial treatment I had. I was looking at the clock wishing the supervising professional who was giving me the treatment to forget me there. As for my favourite I just cannot tell because each one was unique in its kind. The grapes are from the owner’s bio cultivating vineyards as well, so why not trying the Grapes & Hydration peeling and firming treatment with fruit and acids. The mud application and Cleopatra’s bath will surely take you to heaven and these are just a few out of a very long list.
The hotel is ideal for business meetings and Internet is free of charge. I highly recommend it for the most demanding guest of any age and I want to send a big “Thank You” to the hotel management and the professional staff. I can’t wait to be back and savour extra tranquillity and enjoy the indulgence of luxury that is provided here!
I don’t recommend this hotel to families with small children. The premises are for couples who come here to relax so cries of children and kids running here and there are not welcome.

Best Western Lucy Hotel: One of the Gems of Chalkida, Recently Renovated, T

by greekcypriot

We spent 2 wonderful nights at the Historical Lucy Hotel of Chalkida. I find its location the best, so close to the amazing waterfront and the old bridge of Chalkida. Even though it opened in 1955, the owner paid attention not only to its solid construction back then but also decided to inaugurate a new era for the city and the Hotel was a meeting place for the “high” society of those days. With the last renovation of 2009 Lucy (taken the name from the owner’s daughter) has a new look. It probably remained the same on the outside but you can feel the difference the moment you get inside. Upon entering the mascot of the hotel –an hyena, welcomes every guest and it is safely kept in a glass box. It was carried from Africa from the owner Mr. Plataniotis and it is here since the day the hotel opened.

The premises are ideal for business conferences, lunch or dinner gatherings. In the past I came here several times on business meetings, lunch but mostly dinner parties but never before had I the chance to stay at the hotel. To be honest I was a bit concerned when I read some reviews mentioning that they were disturbed from the street noise but I can assure you that there was not such problem. Our room was on the 3rd floor (Room #310) overlooking the waterfront.

Reception: Two of the staff at the reception that I had the chance to get to know more than the others was Thanasi and Popi. I found them competent and very helpful. The reception staff can speak the English language fluently as well.

Our room was not huge but it was comfortable with a door separating the hall and the bathroom, something that I always appreciate and the sound-proofing I think it was fine. One of the walls was navy blue and the silver frame with some lilies created a nice contrast. On the opposite wall there was a round clock on the wall which proved helpful. There was a large closet with many drawers on the side, a safe box, shoe polish facilities, a mini bar and the TV set included both cable and satellite channels. The toiletries included an Ocean Galet de Savon soap, and Revitalized Shampoo and Shower gel and Body cream. The hairdryer however was the one we usually find stuck on the wall in the bathrooms (not very strong) but in all, the room had all the comforts of a 4* hotel without the frills: I believe the ones who need more than this they can simply look for a 5* hotel but they cannot find a better hotel than this in this city.

I found breakfast adequate, and it was amazing how we could enjoy our breakfast overlooking the boats and the awesome view from the huge crystal windows which were double glazed leaving all the noise outside! The lounge is nicely decorated and there is a bar between the lounge and breakfast room.

All rooms have balconies, but the best are those overlooking the waterfront. The tide at the Euripus strait changes every 6 hours and it is a rare phenomenon worth watching.
On both sides of the hotel there is a multitude of restaurants serving Sea food, Pizzas, Kebab or Traditional Greek cuisine for all tastes and all pockets. Don’t miss the Xenia Bar Restaurant which is very popular in Chalkida. It is on the hill of Karababa very close to the Castle and it can easily be seen from the hotel. I spotted it from our room and we decided to have our lunch out there enjoying a huge “pikilia” a variety of bonne bouche and some fine quality wine. We have been here several times in the past. The view is breathtaking, and the staff professionals. Athenians travel all the way during the weekend to enjoy a cup of coffee or dine here and enjoy the breathtaking views of the city of Chalkida.
Of course those who don’t wish to eat out there is a leaflet with the daily menu to choose from in each room, but I believe the restaurant is mostly used when there are conference meetings or wedding parties and from what I remember there is always a rich buffet.

Car Parking:The hotel charges a 13 euro fee for the car park, which I don’t think it is too much since I have gone to hotels charging 38 euro a night in Athens. However, we were lucky this time to park the car in a safe neighbourhood very close to the hotel (Ayias Varvaras Square) on both nights. In the morning it is a very busy square and you can hardly find a parking space however in the evening it is very easy to park in the round area.

There is a Spa-type of service for those who wish to relax and enjoy some relaxing massage or therapy, -the grape and chocolate therapies are popular here, but I did not feel like having a massage this time. Chalkida is so beautiful and so interesting, and the view from our room was magic. What more would one want? Depending on the time, and weather conditions the scene changes and we were lucky to have both sunshine, cloudy weather and rain the last day we left.
The seafront still had the Christmas street decorations and the fact that we could walk on the side road in front of the hotel was great, contrary to some reviews which found this negative!!
The pedestrian road adds to the beauty and it is surely not negative as some might say.

I don’t believe you will find a more beautiful hotel than this in Chalkida. It is a hotel that I can highly recommend and would love to return in the summer.

EVIA Hotel and Suites: The Gem of Marmari!

by greekcypriot

We just returned from Evia Hotel where we spent 2 wonderful nights. As a Guide writer I had to visit Marmari for some photos and had to choose from a list of hotels on the net. I read both the positive and negative comments and seeing how impressive the building was I decided to book here. My curiosity was to check on people who posted negative comments as I know of times that similar comments just want to harm the business or come from people whose demands are out of this world. The majority of times they are anonymous too. It happens that our house is just an hour and thirty minutes from the resort but we wanted to have a break and I thought that if the hotel was not what we expected we could leave. It was actually like testing on its bad comments.

It is a new hotel opened 2 years ago, but the owners are professionals and have a long experience in the business as they have one or two other hotels in the area.

The outer (Karystou) stone structure makes it impressive. The name of the stone comes from the nearby village of Karystos, and the stones come from this area and very popular in the whole country. Its interior on the other hand combines the Italian design of style with elegant clean lines, soft and warm colours that happily surprise the visitor. The huge swimming pool attached to the children’s pool stands out with reed umbrellas in the green garden with many beach beds. It is truly unbelievable of how such beautiful hotel is out here in this small village of Marmari. It might not be on the beach but located on a hill thus giving some breathtaking views. It overlooks the marina (150 metres away) and some small islands with the shortest beach a kilometre away.

Our spacious comfortable room had 3 beds on the 2nd floor. We were impressed by the roomy stylish lifts. The bathroom had a Jacuzzi shower and it was all made of shiny good quality tile and marble wash basin, with different toiletries and very clean bright white towels. There was a mini bar and a big wardrobe with a mirror and it gave us the impression that no one before us had used the room. There were no coffee facilities though! Our balcony was on the side above the swimming pool where I loved having my afternoon coffee and overlook the coast and the marina with the ships coming and going.

Breakfast was more than adequate with a variety of different cheese to choose from, pork and turkey ham, fried and boiled eggs, sausages, sliced tomatoes, caned orange juice, omelette mixed with tomatoes, fruit salad, a variety of seasonal fruit, honey and marmalade, French coffee and tea, and different cakes, biscuits croissants and bread to choose from.
Because it is September the restaurant was closed, but Mr. Thanasis the owner told us that lunch or dinner is offered upon request. Of course there are so many restaurants to pick from in short distance by the coast that we preferred to eat out.

The small bus of the hotel carries guests from the port to the hotel and in times of groups, guests are driven for free to the nearby little village of Paradisi. There are 2 nice cheap restaurants to choose from with good quality local food. In fact we had lunch at one of the two and we loved it.
Maria, the owner’s daughter advised us on places and beaches to visit in short distance. Her info was precious thus saving us time from searching. Constantinos the young man at the bar and responsible for breakfast was very polite and although young in age he was very attentive. Internet is free here.

We left with only positive comments and the assurance of the great hospitality here. I would love to return and stay at one of the suite apartments on one winter weekend. For people coming from Athens, ferries come daily from Rafina to Marmari thus making it an ideal holiday destination.

If I was forced to find a negative comment I would only say that the buildings overlooking the hotel in the street are of no style at all, but the owners’ plans are to turn to advantage the piece of land lower of the pool and add greenery and high trees all around.

I urge coming visitors not to rely on the negative comments as nothing of what has been written is true. It is unfair for this business believe me!

Pelagos Hotel (Agios Minas) Chalkida: Tranquillity in an Art and Stylish Hotel

by greekcypriot

Our 3 day trip here was exceptional. I had visited this hotel several times in the past on seminars or business meetings years back. We wanted to relax this time, and at the same time not go too far from where we live. A look on the reviews on TripAdvisor made me hold back at first, but in the end I booked out of curiosity.

I find the bad comments on TripAdvisor totally unfair, and I truly believe they come from people who want to harm the hotel; from people who really don’t know what they want, or are never satisfied with anything, no matter what! So, I urge people not to trust anonymous comments, especially if they come from those who have one or two reviews only. It is obvious why they do it.

Pelagos is an old hotel but it is a hotel that will never lose its good-will no matter what! It is ideally situated only 4 kms from Chalkida on a hill overlooking the open sea. The word “pelagos” actually means open sea and the views from up there, are breathtaking. There are several fish restaurants within a short distance, less than a mile.

Our room #219 was normal in size very clean and comfortable with all the necessary amenities of a 4* hotel. The balcony was big with a marble table and two chairs and we could see the open sea and the beautiful gardens with palm trees, oleander plants, olive and pine trees, and colorful bougainvilleas. The chapel of the hotel is in the garden for couples who wish to get married here. The décor in the room was simple but stylish. The bathroom was not big but clean with bright white towels and a bathroom robe found in the big wardrobe. There was a mini bar with a bottle of cold water as a treat from the hotel, and a bottle of home-made liqueur. There was a safe, and different toiletries, even a jar with cotton and a razor, a brush for clothes and shoe polish. There was an electric mosquito repellent, but throughout our stay we did not see a single mosquito in the round area.

There is an outdoor Jacuzzi by the swimming pool but since there was the beautiful sandy beach below which we could not resist, we skipped it completely. I have to mention that the sound of the waves on the coast could be heard in our room each night and it was magic. For this reason we kept the balcony door wide open and there was no need to have the air conditioning on.
The grounds are clean and cared and the boys at the swimming pool bar area, Stelios and George were professionals, extremely helpful and very polite. You will find local cuisine mostly here and we had lunch at the hotel each day. Fotini, the young lady at the reception desk, Dimitra and Rena the two ladies who cared for our breakfast each morning, surely do their work well. They were always with a smile and ready to help.

The owners Mr. and Mrs. Alexandrou are noble people and they seem to be loveable and this is something I noticed through our short stay. People keep coming back and I came across many who are customers for more than 15 years. In some months from now the hotel is going to change hands and the children and relatives are going to takeover the business and I truly want to visit it again when this happens. I am anxious to see the difference.

Breakfast was more than adequate with all sorts of different things to choose from. I loved the fresh thick orange juice each morning, and my French coffee. There were different home made marmalades, crisps and crackers, a variety of bread and cheese, honey with walnuts, boiled eggs but not omelettes. If you want an omelette you are charged some extras. The room does not include coffee or tea facilities so you can order for 3 euro. Internet connection is however free of charge.

The hotel looks like an Art gallery, thanks to Mrs. Fani the owner and heart of the business in all these years. I really don’t know why this might bother some people. It is done with style and love and somebody would expect to hear only positive comments. It shows the sensitive side of a noble lady who adores art and beauty.

I recommend the hotel to people of all ages who love good local food and want to find tranquility and enjoy the Greek hospitality. Try the hotel’s wine if you come here. I wish I could spend more days and I would love to visit it again soon.

" Studios Karavos": Cleanliness is the Major Factor here!

by greekcypriot

I spent 3 nights at the “Studios Karavos” some days ago. The studios are newly built and they are only a few steps from the beautiful coast which is full of traditional restaurants and many café and beach bars. Many of the buildings opposite the marina are classic and they are really beautiful with different colors and nice architecture. Karavos is just 2 Kms from Aliveri, and it is a hot spot during the summer months.

Our room was fully equipped with kitchenette however we seldom used it. The owners are very nice people and they did their best to make our stay comfortable.

I was impressed by the simplicity of the stylish furniture, and the beautiful colors of the interior décor.
Internet is free which was very important for me. Our room had a small balcony overlooking the beautiful coast. It was bright, very spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was not big, but it was very clean. In fact cleanliness is the major factor here.
We usually spent some moments of relaxation and chat with the owners and other occupants at the Modus Vivendi café before going upstairs to our room each day. The café is for the occupants only. There is a free parking space for the occupants at the back of the hotel. Parking is very important as the street the hotel is situated is really busy during the summer months. Many people get down to Karavos mostly after 8:00 pm to enjoy an evening outing. The restaurants and café bars are usually packed, especially during the weekends so having a place to park your car is important.
I highly recommend it and I have already urged friends to book here.

Mandravelos Hotel in Aliveri: You will Feel like Home here!

by greekcypriot

The Mandravelos Hotel apartments are very new and recently I booked one for some relatives for one day. I had to see the hotel first before booking because it is very near where we live.
The apartments of the hotel are on the main Chalkida – Kymi road and people who stay here have a view of the orchards and the houses in the round area.
It is a three storey building with a private parking lot at the back and the garden in front is well looked after and very beautiful.

I admit that I found it unbelievably clean and I liked the fact that the apartments are new. The bedroom had a nice iron bed and the kitchen furniture had a good design and style.

It is fully equipped with full kitchen facilities, air conditioning, central heating, and a private balcony.
The bedroom is quite spacious and comfortable. There were three persons so one had to sleep on the sofa in the sitting room.
The stay was comfortable, and I will surely book here if I have guests next time.
I can definitely recommend it to people who want to visit the round area.
The owners of the hotel surely want to make you feel like home and this is how our relatives felt.

"PEGASUS ESTATE": A Hotel I Highly Recommend !

by greekcypriot

We just returned from “Pegasus Estate” in Acherounes, after spending 3 wonderful nights here. The resort is situated south of the port of Linaria on the east coast. It is a 3 minute drive, or 10 minutes on foot from the port. The small bay is always calm, protected from the strong winds.

The resort is just 30 metres from the beach, and it dominates 2 two-floor buildings which are fully equipped and have the traditional local style. Our room was huge with a comfortable wooden carved bed, our small kitchen with a refrigerator and a small oven, separated by a breakfast bar with three stools. In one corner there was a long Skyrian sofa and two tables. The owner has given much attention to the Skyrian decoration. Clean towels, the bathroom spacious and well lit with a bath tub, although it needs some renovation.
Our verandah was huge overlooking the trim garden with palm trees and grass with colorful plants and nice décor. A play ground for children, and a wood-burning oven are some of the facilities near the café bar of the estate. Plenty of parking space.

The owner and creator of this small paradise Mr. Lefteris Trakos has worked miracles here. His passion is obvious through the whole estate. I was impressed in every step I had. Small details that make every spot in the premises, unique.
I recommend it to both young couples, and families with children.
If I ever visit the island again, I would surely book in this estate.

The Forest Village of Papades in North Evia: An Earthly Paradise!!

by greekcypriot

This place cannot be described in words believe me!
We spent 3 beautiful days out here, and we did not want to leave.

See here what I have written about this hotel on my pages as I am indeed thrilled with the whole package:
http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/greekcypriot/10/1283670381/tpod.html

The Forest Village of Papades is an ideal destination the whole year round, and I strongly believe that it upgrades the island of Evia.
The wooden houses are spacious and comfortable and they are so cosy.

Its rare natural beauty and position (20 acres of forest) is such that a visitor coming here can enjoy both the sea and the mountains. (10 minutes drive from the beach of Vasilika).

The Forest Village is uniquely organized.
The milking of goats, picking of eggs in the morning is also something that excites children and makes the stay an educational as well. Horse-riding is another popular activity here.

Unique tournaments of volleyball, basketball, and backgammon are some of the activities played during the week. On specific days you learn how to make soap or candles, and so many other useful things. I saw different things like home-made jams and crafts on the shelves in the playground that are made on the premises. In fact I was lucky that one of the days I was up there I learnt how to make soap.

Excellent staff and tasty food. A place to remember….an earthly paradise not only for children, but people of all ages. You have to come here to experience all this! Believe me it would be a stay that cannot easily be forgotten.

"KYMI PALACE" Hotel: A JEWEL NEAR THE PORT OF KYMI!

by greekcypriot

We spent 2 nights at the Kymi Palace on our way to the Island of Skyros.
It is a new hotel built amphitheatrically on the hillside, overlooking the port of Kymi, so it was very convenient for us who wanted to catch the Ferry and get to the island. The nearest beach is about 50 metres away!

Our spacious room, overlooking the port had all the amenities of a 4* hotel. The furniture had a simple but exquisite style, and the bright colour of the white sheets and towels was unbelievable!

We had dinner the second evening at the hotel’s restaurant and we enjoyed its excellent cuisine. There was soft music creating an idyllic atmosphere accompanying our food and drinks. The August full moon was shining brightly above, and the sea and sailing boats were creating a romantic atmosphere below. The staff was really friendly and seemed professional.

We felt sorry to leave so soon, but promised ourselves to visit it again and spend more time here.

There are many restaurants and bars in the area nearby where it can be a bit noisy especially during the weekend, but the location of the hotel is away from the noise and traffic.

Tip: Negotiate with the hotel owners the price before booking.

The price depends on the season and the room. It can start from 80 Euros, 90, and 100 euros.
The Presidential suite 150 euros.
Breakfast 14 euros per person
Lunch 18 euros. p.p.

Hotel Steni: A Pleasant Stay away from the Heatwave of August!

by greekcypriot

The Hotel is in a friendly and pleasant environment operating the whole year round.

Mrs. Argyro, - the former owner of the hotel has passed the business to her daughter Zoi and her family, but in reality she is still the main personality here. She is always ready to help her visitors, and always with a smile on her face. She made our stay pleasant and I want to thank her for this.

The rooms don't have a mini bar, but I was told that very soon the rooms will have one and the whole place will be renovated.
The rooms are really small but cosy, and the scenery is awsome!

Steni Hotel is very popular with skiers and naturalists during the winter months. The hotel is in a short distance from the Mountaineering shelter. More info in my Page on Steni Perfecture.

The hotel is in the highest spot in the village and the scenery is awsome.
Ask to be given a room that overlooks the garden which is beautiful and the central fountain with water pouring continously gives you the feeling of a stream next to your room.

The Hotel has a cafe also, so guests can enjoy their drinks from the garden of the hotel itself overlooking the whole village below.

We enjoyed our continental breakfast with sour-dough bread and honey which I enjoyed, butter and jam, and we were asked if we liked some eggs as well.
Here you can feel the Greek hospitality, and our stay was pleasant indeed.

Mrs. Argyro can cook for her guests upon request.

We came here leaving behind the heatwave of the coast, and it was the best thing we did.
The breeze and cool air coming through the two doors we had in our room was amazing reminding us how lucky we were to be here. (Ask for a corner room when you arrive).
I strongly recommend this hotel.
