by AndyRG
This museum is next to the sea, it represents the cretan civilization from roman period till modern times. The painting you see was the first original one of Dominikos Theotokopoulos (El Greco) that can be found in Crete - the 2nd came on 10 January 2005, "Baptisis".
He was born in Handakas - the old name of the city. It shows the monastery of St. Katherine of Sina, Egypt (about 1570).

Santa Catherine church
by Elena_blue
Santa Catherine church is an old church built in the honor of Santa Catherine, Sinai, Egypt. It has really interesting architectural features, especially for those interested in Byzantine architecture. Nowadays there are not services in the church. It hosts an exhibition of old Ggreek Orthdox icons of important value.
The church is in the same yard with St. Minas cathedral.
An absolute 'must' is the site...

An absolute 'must' is the site of Knossos !
The remainders of the oldest Minoan palace. The first palace dates back from around 2000 BC ! The methods of the reconstructions are maybe not always justified, but give an impression of the 'palace' in the Minoan time.
Feel free to take a look at my travelogue on Knossos !

Although I missed the most famous sight of the island
the historical Knossos and the famous picturesque
Agios Nicolaos, I had a nice holiday in my beach resort Rethymnon, quite in middle of Northern Crete. It is mainly visited by people of middle age, but when you accept that you can also enjoy, as there are plenty of good restaurants, nice, clean beach and good excursion program among else walking in a deep gorge and mountain-bike tours on all ways.
