On the south side of mountain Psiloreitis the local villages Zaros and others maintain a self catered furnished shelter. It might be available on request on the spot for a 1-2 nights stay. I didn't go there but I know the place and it is beautiful. Mountain scenery, overlooking the south coast of Crete and the sea. For details, ask George at tavern Votomos, see relevant tip about trout and salmon.
When in Heraklion don't forget to visit St. Minas cathedral. It is a big, wealthy, beautiful church, the biggest in Balkans as far as I know. Locals in Heraklion from the old times love their saint Minas. Old people were saying that the saint on his horse was visiting the neighborhoods of the city. Some people did listen the horse riding during night! In the same yard, visit the old-small church of the saint and the church of Santa Catherine, old church built in the honor of Santa Catherine in Sinai, Egypt-see relevant tip.
The original paint chips are on display at the National Archeogical Museum. The painting on this wall is a reproduction based on what archeologists believe decorated the walls. Dolphins were/are a symbol of luck to the Cretan people.
Crete is a touristic target, a very important one; but, more than that, it is an island with a 5,000 year history, a soul of its own, a nature of its own.
Look at picture of this small i/thymei/ shrub: it may survive in a very dry climate, with sea breezes bringing salt from the waters, only dry land with scarce rain to deep its roots; but it may live for centuries, it is a fodder for goats and a nectare source for bees and ... it is also so lovely to see it covering the dry rocky slopes of the island.
I'm beginning to build this . leave me a few days!
