Travel Tips for Heraklion
Drink raki! It´s allmost like...
by anniina
Drink raki! It´s allmost like vodka here in Finland but better! But be careful...it´s dangerous ;)
If you are lucky, you get to see how they make it..Many houses in Iraklion and all around Crete have places in their backyard where they make it! Raki is made from Treber, the remains of pressing grapes. It is destilled in October or November in the Kasani, the destillery of the village.A Kasani is usually opened for some weeks and the destillery works usually from noon to late in the night, where a lot of people come to celebrate, eat , drink,....
A beautiful church, mountain scenery near Heraklio
by Elena_blue
15 kms from Heraklion is village Anopolis where there is a glorious new built church of saint John. The church is located in a beautiful mountain scenery. It is an ideal afternoon ride by car, if you stay in the area.
Combine it with an afternoon drink or dinner to a nearby village. You can also combine it with visit to the nearby water amusement park.
On a small, easy ride you can experience and enjoy the scenery, a beautiful church, the religious feeling of locals and also the easy going life to the pisturesque villages of the area.
To go there, go from Heraklio eastwards by the north coast. At Kokkini Hani village turn right (there are signs to "Anopolis"), drive upwards to the hill. On the big crossroad go left to go to the church or turn right to go to the water amusement park.
Venetian Fortress
by Oana_bic
Built by the Venetian occupiers of Crete, it was originally called Roca al mare. The first structure was destroyed by an earthquake in around 1300 and the existing building dates from approx 1525.
The fortress, built from massive rocks over two floors, forms the end of the city walls. During the Ottoman occupation it became a prison for revolutionaries: many died in its dungeons. Nowadays it is used for more peaceful events: theatre, exhibitions, cultural shows and conferences.
IRAKLION
by Juliet67
Iraklion is the capital of Crete and of the prefecture of Iraklion. It is easily accessible from Athens by at least four flights a day.
Iraklion is a very busy city, especially during the tourist season, so it is advisable to book reservations for accommodation before arrival, especially during August. If you are travelling by car there are parking lots near the end of Kalokairinou Street at the Chanioporta and below the Archaeological Museum, one of the many uses of a medieval moat. Make use of them and take the opportunity to see the historical monuments.
The National Road is easily reached from Iraklion. You can drive to Agios Nikolaos in 1 hr (72km) and Chania in 2 hours (137km). This road is enjoyable and the scenery is spectacular. Drive with caution on all roads in Crete. All means of transportation, including donkeys, farm equipment, and tour buses use the roads at varying speeds. These facts are not truly understood by many of the tourists, or even the locals.
Crete and Irakleio
by daniday
When visiting Crete do not be tempted rush for the beaches immediately. You will probably arrive in Irakelio and it is definitely worth a look before departing for other areas (Rethymno being the most appealing). Irakleio is a bustling Greek town and, although it has a definite emphasis on tourism, has something of a genuine atmosphere as well.
