The best way to see the city...
by anniina
The best way to see the city and the whole Crete is to rent a car and GO! You will allways find some place to sleep and have a good time! It´s also the best way to meet local people! And the beaches...in the southern coast of Crete (for example near Kali Limene) you will find beaches that 'belong' to somebody local..Roads to these beaches usually go through somebody's yard, so go to the owner and ask if you can go to the beach. This way you find the most beautiful, quiet and interesting beaches where you can for example like I did, see the locals fish sharks

Toplou Monastery, or Akrotiriani Monastery, is an important fortress monastery situated in the eastern part of Crete. Although it is not known when the monastery started, there are various documents and seals that point to its existence before the fifteenth century. Throughout its long history, Toplou has withstood many attacks and occupations by invading forces.

Cretans usually like meeting people: They have no real word for foreigner or stranger: Its the same word as 'guest'.
Cretans generaly like Celebrations (with a lot of music, dancing, drinking,...). The following 'dancing'-scene was photographed during a baptism.
Winter can be cold - even in Crete - That is... it's not really cold there, but it can feel cold, because heaters are not really comon in Crete.
But the people have there Rak'i to warm them up. The Cretan Rak'i has nothing in commmon with the turkish Rak'i (which is rather like a Greek Ouzo): it's much closer to the italian Grappa. Raki is made from Treber, the remains of pressing grapes. It is destilled in October or November in the Kasani, the destillery of the village.
