Get out of town!
by jenn_d
Do not just limit yourself to just this one city. There is much to be seen on other parts of the island. Give yourself at least 2 days in Chania and an extra one if you plan to hike the Samaria Gorge. A German Archeology Professor on sabbatical befriended me and acted as my guide at Knososs and the Archeological Museum. He was able to answer many questions for me and point out the pieces with the most historical significance such as the bee pendant and Phaestos disc.
Plenty of small taverns,...
by Nikoscot
Plenty of small taverns, restaurants, Greek-style-fast food (serving souvlaki, gyros ...). But please don't try only these when ordering something. There are more, even greater plates, than moussaka, tzatziki, gyros, souvlaki.
It would be better to go to a village and try to find some local plates, or try some cheese, yogurt, honey etc. They are great.
The Morosini's Fountain - Lion Fountain
by Skipka
Morosini's Fountain is the "socializing point" of the Herakleion. Here people meet, wait for girl/boyfriend or just friends to go out and spend the whole night in several cafes and restaurants around. Fountain itself was the end of the 15 km long pipe built during Venetian period in the city and it was the reservoir of the drinking water. If you named it Lion fountain everyone will know what it is :) but it is dedicated to governor of Herakleion Morosini. It was built such as Loggia in 1628.
I am not sure but when I have been there the hotels and places around used all water of that pipe because lions stood thirsty, there wasn't a drop of water in the fountain :) such a dissapointment...

Crete
by Nantosvelta
Not so long ago I went to the Greek island of Crete.
It was my first real beach holiday.
I really enjoyed myself with being lazy and drinking cocktails.
I hope to tell you more about this trip soon.
