Go to Knossos. That´s where our culture comes from!it is definately a place to see, but it´s so old that there is almost nothing original left from it. Still they have done an unbelieveable job rebuilding it! But the stories are great and if you have a good guide and good imagination...it´s really an experience! It´s living history from 4000years ago!
The best chocolate dessert you will find on the island and not only, named "trouffa".
Barbarigos is a pastry-coffee shop where you can buy trouffa and other pastries and if you want to sit there to eat it and have also a coffee or a refreshment. Trouffa of course, see it on the photo, it is like a small ball. I don't know exactly the recipe, but I know it is delicious, don't miss it. It is about 1Euros per piece. BE CAREFUL: Only Barbarigos pastry shop has this delicious trouffa. It is located is on Psaromiligon str. on the back side of Lion's square.
The Venetian Castle of Heraklion is called Koules (Turkish for Fortress) and was built in the 13th century by the Venetians after they conquered the town. The castle was built to protect the harbour and a place of storage for food and military supplies. The original castle was destroyed by earthquake in 1303 and rebuilt by the Genoese during 1523-1540. Later the castle was used as a prison.
I went to Heraklion in 1998 but I didn't like this town enough to visit it during our Crete trip in 2006 & 2007. This time we had to go to Heraklion to returan our rental car and find a new car for remaining few days (we extended our stay after falling in love with Eastern Crete).
I was pleasantly surprised with how Heraklion is being renovated in recent years.
Historical building are getting a face lift.
Street market is full of nice shops and cafes.
Heraklion will never be like Chania or Rethymno, but if you have to go there, take a moment and stroll through the streets a little :-)

Near Heraklion you find "Knossos". Combined with a visit to the museum in the city, it gives a nice historical view of this island.
