Heraklion to Albania
by etfromnc
I will be on Crete the first week in September and want to go from there to Albania. All the maps which I have indicate no rail connection. Can I make this trip by ferry or rail?

as Crete is an island you will definately need either ferry or plane to the Greek mainland or Corfu,[ another Greek island which is just off the coast of Albania ]
l know there is a daily ferry to Albania from Corfu

I think the most convenient way is to sail from Crete to Piraeus and then take the KTEL bus from Kifissos bus station to Ioannina. From there you will take another bus to Albania. Kakavia is the border point.
KTEL buses in Greece are fast and confy.

Lake Zaros
by Elena_blue
Lake Zaros is a lake near the village of Zaros, about 50 kms from Heraklion southwards. It is a peaceful scenery on the bottom of Psiloreitis mountain. During August there are many different activities, like a "water festival" with a fishing competition, children activities and so on. Come here to enjoy the scenery, have a drink or a meal, eat trout to the nearby fish farms or take the hiking path of Rouvas canyon - see the relevant off the beaten path tip.
Port Authority Building
by Balam
Walking along the harbour front you will notice an old steam train and an old boat on the side of the road leading up to the Port Authority building. The building houses the port police, Coast Guard and of course the Port Authority. It is a good place to take pictures or the harbour and the Venation fortress, There is also a very good and reasonably priced bar restaurant.
SPINALONGA
by Juliet67
SPINALONGA
The small islet of Spinalonga is a short boat trip from Elounda. It is the site of one of the most important and best fortresses the Venetians built on Crete and was constructed in 1579 to protect the harbour, entrance to the bay and anchorage of Elounda.
