Knossos...
by AndyRG
This place with the great archaeological interest is 6 km south of the city. Knossos was the centre of the minoan civilization (2.000-1.400 BC).
You can check my travelogue on the prefecture of Irakleio page for more details and pictures.
On this one, you see the "prince of the crinums", as his crown is made by crinums and peacock's plumes.

Koules Venetian Fortress
by Balam
This Impressive fortress was built in the early 1500s and guarded the old port; it is unique for the impressive mass of its stone fortifications, its immensely thick walls and the views from its turret and roof.
The restored interior looks just like a castle should.
On the exterior are two carved relief’s of the Lion of St Mark which the Turks surprisingly left intact.
It was €2 to get in and it is open from 0800 to 1930 1st July to 31 October and 0900 to 1500 other times of the year (although I have heard they sometimes they open late and close early)
My Heraklion Page

"Welcome to Heraklion"
Heraklion is the capital of Heraklion Prefecture, with an international airport named after the writer Nikos Kazantzakis. It is the second busiest airport of Greece, mostly due to the fact that Crete is a major destination for tourists during summer. There are regular domestic flights to and from Athens, Thessaloniki and Rhodes with Aegean Airlines and Olympic Airlines. Also flying to and from Athens is Athens Airways, whereas Cyprus Airways and Aegean Airlines fly to Larnaca.
Crete has a warm Mediterranean climate. Summers in the lowlands, are hot and dry with clear skies. Dry hot days are often relieved by a system of seasonal breezes. The mountain areas are much cooler, with considerable rain. Winters are mild in the lowlands with rare frost and snow. Although Heraklion is further south than Athens, it has a milder climate.
My stay in Heraklion was very brief but annoying. I would like you to be aware of what to avoid if you are flying via Cyprus Airways from Rhodes Island to Larnaca with stopover in Heraklion.
WELCOME TO MY CRETE PAGE
by Hanny
It's almost 9 years ago since I visited CRETE.
I've made an 10-day's tour around the island.
Crete is the biggest one of the Greek islands.
The island exists mainly of three chains of mountains.
At the westside the Lefka Ori, in the middle the Idhi Oros and at the east side the Lassithi mountains.
There are some fertile low-lying plains between the mountains, of whitch the plain of Messara is the most important one.
The plains have a mild climate: In Januari 10.8ºC and in
July about 25,7ºC.
The capital city is Chania, but the city with the most inhabitants is Heraklion.
There is an airport in Chania as well as in Heraklion.
On the island are several places of great archeological value.
Knossos, Malia and Phaistos.
King Minos lived in the palace of Knossos (2000 B.C.) and there are still a lot of interesting things to see, such as beautiful paintings!
Knossos is situated 5 km from the centre of Heraklion. It's the most ancient and most famous city of Crete, headquarter of Minos.
Knossos and Gortys were the two cities that were fighting for the principality of the island. Those two cities were domineering to the rest of the cities.
