heraklion city centre hotel for one night
by lollypop2003
Hello, I am traveling to Crete on the 9th of June and I need a double room in a budget hotel or bed and breakfast in Heraklion for one night. Ideally under £30 per night and within walking distance of the venetian fort . I have run various searches on the internet but I keep ending up with the same, upmarket, expensive hotels in Heraklion centre or in the surrounding area.I understand that smaller establishments perhaps don't advertise on the internet, has anyone got any recommendations? thanks!

For that very small amount of money I think you are looking at hostels rather than hotels.
Tey www.hostelworld.com and www.hostelbookers.com
Many hostels now have separate rooms.
You might also check through

Not a site I've used, but it will at least give you an idea of what is available and at what price.

Under 30 GBP for an Heraklion hotel is pushing it now that the Euro is almost on parity with the pound. But for a slightly scruffy but otherwise decent Cat C hotel in the centre you could try the Kris Hotel at 2 Doukos Beaufort. It doesn't have a website (that I'm aware of), the phone number is 2810 23944. The last time I was there was in late June, 2 years ago, when I just arrived without pre-booking. They weren't particularly busy and I'm sure that if I'd negotiated I could have gotten a better price. At that time the standard double room was 40 Euros which was what I paid.
It's easy to find - just up the hill from the ferry port and on the same street as Hotel Lato - whose neon signage you can see from the port.

Travel Tips for Heraklion

Visit Knossos, an important city in antiquity, which was inhabited continiously from the Neolithic period until the 5th century AD. Here the main attraction is Minoan palace, built on Kephala hill. According to tradition it was the seat of the wise king Minos, the son of Zeus and Europe. The Palace of Knossos is connected with thrilling legends, such as the myth of the Labirinth, with the Minotaur, and the story of Daidalos and Ikaros. I was impressed by the whole site of the Palace of Knossos, the wisdom of our fore-fathers and beautiful peacocks walking to and fro in the park.

"Meet & Eat in Crete": this magnificent small guide book about Dine and Wine, was my best travel companion throughout Crete!
This small sized guide book (less than 70 pages), is distributed FREE OF CHARGE, in all major Cretan cities and villages, major travel agencies, tourist offices, restaurants, cafes and hotels. It contains vital and essential well written information, about where to dine in Crete and which wines to choose to accompany your dinner, without forgetting to mention some useful general tourist information.
A special emphasis is given to restaurants thst serve good, traditional Cretan cuisine, as well as to gourmet restaurants.
A real must!
Knossos

The myth of Crete. When I have read Greek myths I decided to find out the labyrinth one day and to explore places where Minotaurus lived. Hmm.. later I have read it is just the myth nothing else. There is a theory that labyrinth should be the Palace of Knossos thanks to its complicated structure and ambients ... who knows history is the field of myths and half truths, theories etc .. Who can prove something he really didn't experience?
well, Knossos is the main attraction on this island thanks to all those myths and also for sure history. Minoian period and the seat of Minoian king is fascinating to see. But prepare for it better than me. All important frescos and elements are in Heraklion Archaelogical museum not in the place itself. There are just ruins and replicas of some frescos. But anywway, it is worth to see.
Those who are lazy to read information tables there are guides but it is enough just to read what is written on the tables to get into image of old times.

City centre : Central museum, Knossos, harbour, the four lions fountail (it doesn't work anymore).
Out of the city : The magnificent but crowdy beaches and the mountains.
For less crowdy places try Southern Crete.

Spent one day here. Knossos is interesting but it is just a bunch of ruins. But together better than some, not as well as others. The town has a nice tourist strip if you are interested and kinda crowded, busy and not very scenic at all.
Night ferry again to Crete. Much better than the international ferry to Patras. Saw the ancient Minoan palace of Knossos. Lots of old ruins. most of the good stuff (artifact wise) is all in the museums with weather and temp control.
Change of schedule b/c we neglected to check and make sure that ferries are going to Santorini in the time allotted. They aren't. So, dang it, we are skipping Santorini (otherwise it would mean serious back tracking and/or missing something else). Straight to Rhodes and then Kos and on to Turkey, so I'm kinda excited b/c i was planning on cutting something from the schedule b/c i didn't think we would fit it all in and now hopefully i won't have to.
The hotel in Crete is awseome. Hotel Kronos, great ocean views. Great prices and location. And space. not cramped at all to bad it's only for a night. Day ferry to Rhodes. Hopefully as nice a hotel as this one.
