Transportation from Heraklion to Plakias

by wanderlustig

Can anyone tell me whether there is public transportation from Heraklion to Plakias? We will be touring Greece in late Sept./early Oct. We have made arrangements to leave our organized tour when we reach Heraklion, Crete (the last stop before we return to Athens). We want to go to Plakias to visit a friend who lives there. Should we rent a car? Is there a bus? Thank you for your help!

You have to first take a bus from Heraklion to Rethymnon:

and then another bus from Rethymnon to Plakias:

based on the fact that generally public transportation in Greece is not very reliable, I would suggest to rent a car. Besides the international chains that operate in Crete (Budget, Hetz, Avis) there are smaller local firms like autocandia and Car Rental Greece (www.carrentalgreece.gr) where you can rent a car for a few euros, and go to visit your friend safely and in comfort.

The bus from Chania to Heraklion is reliable.

I agree, the KTEL bus services on Crete are excellent value for money and mostly run to time. Where on earth does someone come up with a comment that is basically incorrect?

Travel Tips for Heraklion

Crete - Internet Connectivity

by hcosgrave

There is excellent internet connectivity all over Crete Island - I was amazed to find good broadband even in the remotest of places - for instance in the taverna nearest the beach in Falasarna.
In one "rent-rooms" in Plakias, when I asked if they had Wi-Fi the answer was "of course"!
I was not charged for usage anywhere - but I had a small notebook for this purpose.

Hugh After an 18 year gap in visits to Crete I was amazed to be able to meet up with some local friends from past times. One man took the trouble to motorcycle 20 miles to meet me.
I won't allow a gap like that to happen again!

go to the Natural History...

by anniina

go to the Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC). It offers the visitors a unique chance of a rich experience on the natural environment of Crete and its distinctiveness, as it reveals from the ecologically and culturally complex landscape of the Eastern Mediterranean. There are realistic models of biotopes, animal and plant collections, as well as plenty of photo material, and you can discover the natural beauty of Crete and continental Greece. Forests, phryganic and maquis vegetation, marshes, caves, rocky and sandy beaches, mountain massifs as well as special presentations on threatened animals (sea mammals, birds, etc), are some of the topics of the permanent exhibition.
Address: 157 Knossou Av., the road leading to the ancient palace of Knossos.

A cold beer on st. Titus sq.

by Elena_blue about Pagopiion

Pagopiion is a bistrot on the beautiful st. Titus sq. It is open all day long until late and you can have here a cold beer, coffee and if you want to eat, you can choose from its eclectic dish menu. What makes Pagopiion really special to me is the place where it is located. On my favourite st. Titus sq. which is beautiful day around. However Pagopiion is worth visiting for itself. An eclectic place on its interior and on its dishes as well.

Knossos

by AcornMan

Built around 1900 BC, the original Palace of Knossos was destroyed by an earthquake in about 1700 BC but was soon rebuilt. In its time it was the capital of Minoan Crete and was the largest of the island's palaces with over 1000 rooms, elaborate drainage systems, flushing toilets, and paved roads.

Today what visitors see is a sprawling set of ruins, much of it restored by Sir Arthur Evans between 1900 and 1929. Keep in mind as you walk around that what you're seeing is Evans's interpretation of what the palace may have looked like, so it's hard to say how accurate the restored structures really are.

In addition to seeing Knossos, be sure to visit Heraklion's archeological museum, where artifacts from Knossos and other Minoan settlements are displayed.

A night in Heraklion - Knossos Tip

by SurfaceTravel

We stayed here in order to see Knossos (see tip). We also saw the Archaeological Museum, which had some amazing exhibits, but difficult to fully appreciate due to a lack of multi-lingual explanations. Aside from these two attractions, there isn't really any reason to go or stay in this city.
